Oona Chaplin: From Cuban Treehouse to ‘Avatar’s’ Fiery Leader - A Journey of Change
Oona Chaplin delivers a powerhouse performance as Varang, the compelling and ruthless leader of the Mangkwan clan (the Ash People) in Avatar: Fire and Ash. She embodies both physical strength – often seen wielding flaming arrows or dual blades - and a simmering intensity that captivates audiences. But her path to this iconic role was anything but conventional, a testament to a life lived deliberately and a dedication to her craft.
Chaplin’s lineage is undeniably storied, being the granddaughter of comedic legend Charlie Chaplin and the great-granddaughter of playwright Eugene O’Neill. However, she forged her own path, one that led her far from the spotlight before ultimately landing her in the world of Pandora.
A Retreat to Simplicity
Interestingly, when the initial audition for the third Avatar film arrived, Chaplin was intentionally disconnected from the industry. She was living in a self-built treehouse in Cuba,a deliberate choice to recalibrate her life. “There was very little that could have drawn me away from that treehouse,” Chaplin shared wiht Vanity Fair, “but a call from james Cameron certainly did.”
Prior to her Cuban retreat, Chaplin dedicated herself to humanitarian work in the Calais Jungle, a refugee and immigrant encampment in France. This profoundly challenging experiance left her needing to disconnect and find solace. “I experienced a personal crisis and decided to build a treehouse in the Cuban jungle with a couple of neighbors,” she explained.
A Decade-Long Secret & Personal Growth
Remarkably, Chaplin filmed her scenes for Fire and Ash back in 2017, alongside footage for The Way of Water. This meant nearly a decade of safeguarding her character’s secrets. Fortunately, the enriching nature of the experience allowed her to find peace even with the uncertainty surrounding the film’s release.
“I felt I accomplished and learned so much as a person and as an artist,” she stated, adding that she would have been content even if the film never saw the light of day. As then,Chaplin has embraced new chapters in her life, including marriage, motherhood, and a move to a 20-acre farm in Sonoma County,California.
