The Golden Triangle,a name steeped in history and illicit trade, derives its moniker from its unique geographical position. It sits at the crossroads of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Originally, “gold” referred to opium, the lucrative crop that fueled the regionS wealth starting in the 19th century. The term “Golden Triangle” gained prominence in the 1970s, popularized by the CIA, as drug trafficking soared. Approximately 700 tonnes of opium were annually produced and exported globally, often refined into heroin. However, the landscape of drug production has dramatically shifted.
today, the region is witnessing a surge in synthetic drugs like methamphetamine and ketamine. These are manufactured in clandestine laboratories hidden within Myanmar. Consequently, Golden Triangle cartels, now allied with powerful chinese mafia networks, surpass even their Mexican counterparts in synthetic drug production.
This massive illegal industry is inextricably linked to the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, which erupted following the 2021 military coup. It provides critical funding for various factions involved in the conflict, perpetuating instability and violence.
