Naginata Club: A Resurgence of Skill and Spirit
The Naginata Club experienced a notable turnaround in 2025, securing a commendable 3rd place finish at the prestigious All Japan Inter-College Team competition in August. This success marks a significant improvement from the previous year, where the team faced an early exit in the first round. According to coach Akiko Amakawa, the team’s enhanced morale, fueled by the integration of four talented first-year students, was instrumental in their ability to practice with the intensity and realism of actual match scenarios.
Mikan kamiyama (3rd year, Faculty of Physical Education, Hojo High School, Ehime)
Leading the charge in the team competition was Mikan Kamiyama, a 3rd-year student from the Faculty of Physical Education and a graduate of Hojo High School in Ehime.Kamiyama, returning from an injury, displayed aggressive tactics and unwavering focus, preventing opponents from gaining any advantage.Strategic preparation also played a key role; numerous matches against formidable Kinki-region teams allowed the team to thoroughly understand their competitors’ strengths and weaknesses.
Individual accolades further highlighted the club’s success. arata Masumoto, a 3rd-year student from the Faculty of Physical Education and a former student of Niigata Seiryo High School, earned a well-deserved 3rd place in the individual competition. His performance was particularly remarkable considering his concurrent responsibilities as vice president of the intercollegiate tournament. Masumoto’s effective long-range attacks, leveraging his extraordinary reach, proved to be a decisive factor.
The West Japan Intercollegiate Championships in November saw continued success for the Naginata Club.Masumoto achieved his fifth consecutive victory in the acting category, solidifying his position among the top eight performers in all of Japan. Furthermore, Chisaki Kawaguchi, a 3rd-year student from the Faculty of Physical Education and a graduate of Wakayama Kita High School, teamed up with Kamiyama to claim victory with a display of refined technique honed through years of high school experience. The team division secured a runner-up position,while Masumoto added another 3rd place finish to his impressive record.
