Iñaki Urdangarin Reflects on Prison, Family, and a Path Forward
Iñaki Urdangarin has recently given his frist in-depth interview following his release from prison after serving time related to the Noos case. The experiance, as he describes it, fundamentally altered his life, including the dissolution of his marriage to Infanta Cristina. The former handball player, approaching his 58th birthday, candidly stated that entering prison was the most challenging moment.He explained that the initial shock of incarceration marks the end of defense and the beginning of a profoundly challenging period.
Everything shifts dramatically with the closing of the prison doors – isolation sets in,and familiar connections are severed. He was permitted two phone calls and used them to reach out to his mother.
finding Strength Within
Prison, surprisingly, became a space for introspection. Urdangarin shared that it allowed him to confront his past and gain a deeper understanding of himself. this self-finding, he believes, is crucial for building a future.
However, he also expressed deep regret over lost time. losing everything materially was painful, but he emphasized the emotional toll of the separation from Infanta Cristina. “I love Cristina very much and I deeply regret it,” he stated.
He underscored the importance of family, asserting his unwavering support for his children. He realized during his time in prison that being a parent is a role without equal. He also acknowledged a need for personal growth, recognizing a tendency toward control and a newfound desire for greater empathy.
Re-entry and Acceptance
Returning to society wasn’t easy.Urdangarin described feeling stigmatized and judged, despite his desire for change. He found that people struggled to see beyond his past.
Now, he’s focused on building a new life with a supportive group, working on a collaborative project. He believes that harboring resentment is counterproductive, something he actively worked through during his incarceration.
I’ve found that confronting the past – acknowledging both successes and failures – is essential for acceptance. He noted that while feelings of resentment may arise, thay ultimately drain energy. Initially, he encountered distance from others, but he reports that interactions are becoming more natural.
A Son’s Support
His son, Pablo Urdangarin, recently offered a public display of support. Pablo unexpectedly appeared at the finale of OT 2025 alongside Johanna Zott.
When asked about his father’s interview, Pablo was direct. “I’ve seen it,” he confirmed. He then added, with heartfelt sincerity, “He is our father and loves us very much.”
