CHICAGO — Dylan Cease struck out 12 and combined with two relievers in a one-hit effort to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

Cease worked seven innings in a triumphant return to Chicago. The White Sox traded him to San Diego in March.

He allowed the Cubs’ only hit, when Brazilian Yan Gomes reached base on a slow grounder to second baseman in the third inning.

Cease (5-2) issued a pair of walks and hit a hit, in a job that equaled the most laborious of his career, with 113 pitches.

Dominican Wandy Peralta got three outs and Venezuelan Robert Suárez pitched the ninth inning to record his twelfth save in the same number of opportunities.

The Padres thus delivered their second shutout of the campaign.

Venezuelan Luis Arráez hit two singles and scored a couple of times. He helped San Diego win for the sixth time in eight games.

Also for the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 1-for-5 with an RBI, Manny Machado 1-for-4 with an RBI.

For the Cubs, Dominican Christopher Morel is 3-0.
