The goal is to enhance the park’s accessibility, safety, and overall experience for everyone.
the two Design Options: Promenade vs. Meander
The DOT has presented two distinct options, each with its own strengths and potential drawbacks:
* Option 1: The Promenade. This design envisions a more defined separation between pedestrian and vehicular traffic. it features wider, continuous pedestrian walkways alongside designated traffic lanes.
* Option 2: The Meander. This option builds upon the existing open street layout, expanding pedestrian plazas and car-free zones. It aims to amplify the current experience, offering “the status quo on steroids,” as one advocate put it.
Both options prioritize pedestrian safety by creating large, car-free plazas. Though, key details like precise traffic diversion routes and the implementation of “atypical block designs” on the western end are still being finalized.
Community Voices: A Divided Vision
while both designs aim to improve Paseo Park, they haven’t garnered universal support. Two prominent groups - the 34th Avenue Open Streets Coalition and the Alliance for paseo Park – hold differing opinions.
* The 34th Avenue Open Streets Coalition favors Option 2 (The Meander). They believe it best preserves the park’s current character and expands the car-free areas that have become so popular. Jim Burke, a co-founder of the Coalition, emphasizes that “Meander” means “more plazas and car-free areas – that’s what we really love about it.”
* The Alliance for Paseo Park isn’t fully satisfied with either option. Their primary concern centers around the continued presence of mopeds, which they deem a safety hazard. Luz maria Mercado, the alliance’s board chair, advocates for a dedicated micro-mobility lane on a nearby street like Northern Boulevard to effectively deter mopeds from using the park.
