The American Paul Austerdied this Tuesday at the age of 77, was one of the main authors of his generation. He was a writer of extensive work, with 20 complete novels and even more books poetry and non-fiction.

‘The Invention of Solitude’ (1982)

A mix of a memoir with essays on literature and the act of growing up reading alone, it was the work that catapulted Auster to fame

‘The New York Trilogy’ (1987)

Composed of three novels that renew the detective genre with intricate narratives, it is to this day the author’s best-known work.

‘Leviathan’ (1992)

Two writers try to change the world with their words, until one of them opts for more drastic methods in this thriller-paced work

‘The Red Notebook’ (1995)

A short book, less than a hundred pages, efficient in presenting the main themes of the author’s work: the power of chance and coincidences over people’s lives

‘Timbuktu’ (1999)

Award-winning work that mixes fable and realism in telling the story of a homeless poet with a penchant for prophecy and his dog, who understands the language of men

‘The Night of the Oracle’ (2003)

Mosaic of narratives in which a writer begins to suspect that the stories he creates could define the future of real people, including his family

‘4321’ (2017)

This jam, more suitable for readers who want to delve deeper into the author’s work, narrates four versions of the life of the same man, with subtle but fundamental changes.
