Perry Bamonte, Longtime Cure Guitarist, Dies at 65
Perry Bamonte, a vital creative force behind The Cure for over three decades, has passed away at the age of 65 following a brief illness. He was a beloved figure to fans and bandmates alike, leaving behind a legacy woven into the fabric of one of alternative music’s most iconic groups.
A native of London, Bamonte’s journey with The Cure began humbly in 1984. Initially joining their road crew at the encouragement of his brother, daryl, who served as their tour manager, he quickly proved invaluable. He transitioned into roles as Robert Smith’s personal assistant and guitar technician, demonstrating a dedication that would define his career.
Bamonte officially became a full performing member in 1990, following the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell. His arrival injected fresh energy into the band’s sound, particularly evident on the landmark album Wish in 1992.
He contributed significantly to several of the album’s most cherished tracks. You’ll recognize his distinctive six-string bass work on hits like “Friday I’m in Love” and the poignant “A Letter to Elise.”
Beyond Wish, Bamonte’s talents graced a string of successful releases. These included the live albums Paris and Show, as well as studio albums Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, and the self-titled the Cure (2004).
However, his artistry extended beyond music. Bamonte was a gifted photographer, capturing stunning images of The Cure’s global adventures. These visuals offered fans a unique glimpse into the band’s world.
After departing The Cure in 2005, he pursued a career as an illustrator. Fortunately, he rejoined the band in 2022 and remained a key member until his passing. In 2019, he was rightfully inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside his bandmates.
The band released a heartfelt statement, describing Bamonte as “Quite, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative.” They emphasized his warm heart and vital role in The cure’s story.
They also noted that the 90 shows following his 2022 return were “some of the best in the band’s history,” culminating in a memorable performance at The Show of a Lost World in London on November 1, 2024. Their thoughts are with his family during this tough time.
the Cure are currently preparing for an extensive European summer tour, beginning in June with a headlining set at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival. The band has not yet announced who will replace Bamonte for these upcoming dates.
Before the tour, Robert Smith is curating the annual Teenage Cancer trust charity concert series at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The series, starting March 23, will feature performances by My Bloody Valentine, Garbage, CHVRCHES, and Manic Street Preachers.
