Carlos Nassar won the World Weightlifting Cup, which is being held in Thailand this year. In the category up to 89 kilograms for men, the Bulgarian equaled the world record in the fight of the Chinese Li Daiying of 396 kilograms, which also secured him the gold.

Nassar, 19, also set a world record in the clean and jerk of 181 kilograms, but it only lasted a minute as Colombia’s Jason Lopez lifted 182 kilograms right after him. Li Daiying’s old world record in the movement was 180 kilograms from the Asian Championships last year.

In the push, however, Nassar was without competition. He lifted 215 kilograms on his first attempt and then attempted two world record attempts at the 224 kilogram movement. In the second of them, the Bulgarian was very close to success, but was unable to hold the bar above his head. Had he succeeded, Nassar would have also set a world record in the 405-kilogram bout.

By comparison, none of Nassar’s deadlift competitors managed more than 210 kilograms. Lopez, Dayin and Antonino Pizzolato did just fine with her.

After Nassar, Jason Lopez finished second in the fight with 392 kilograms. Li Daying was third with 383 kilograms (173 in the throw and 210 in the push). The Italian Pizzolato was fourth with a fight of 380 kilograms (170 kg + 210 kg).

For Nassar, this is the first World Cup for men.
