Philadelphia Restaurants Targeted by Fake Google Reviews: A Growing Threat & What You Need to Know
A disturbing trend is impacting Philadelphia’s vibrant restaurant scene: a surge of fake, one-star Google reviews. Several independently-owned establishments are being targeted, with some owners even receiving extortion attempts via WhatsApp to remove the damaging posts. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a direct threat to their livelihood.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening, why it matters, and what’s being done to combat this issue.
The Wave of Negative Reviews
The problem came to light recently when Alex Tewfik, owner of Mish Mish in East Passyunk, noticed a sudden influx of one-star reviews. These weren’t legitimate complaints about the food or service. Instead, they detailed dishes Mish Mish doesn’t even serve – curry, noodles, tacos, and burgers.
“I clicked into it and saw 39 other reviews all one star, all mentioning things we don’t serve here,” Tewfik explained.”It was clear this was an attack.”
Mish Mish wasn’t alone. At least eight other Philadelphia restaurants, including Ambra and Southwark in Queen Village, experienced similar attacks, receiving roughly 30 fabricated one-star reviews each. Marina Oliveria and Chris D’Ambro, owners of Southwark, noted the unusual speed of the postings – all within a two to three hour window.
Why Fake Reviews Matter: The Impact on Yoru Business
In today’s digital age, online reviews are critical for restaurants. Potential customers heavily rely on Google reviews to make dining decisions. A low star rating can be a significant deterrent, preventing new customers from even considering your establishment.
Consider this:
* First Impressions: Your Google rating is often the first thing potential customers see.
* Decision-Making: A 3.5-star rating can be enough to make someone choose a competitor.
* Lost Revenue: Fewer customers translate directly to lost revenue and potential business failure.
“It’s definitely impacting our business,” Oliveria stated. “They’re scrolling, checking us out, seeing 3.5 stars, and then they’re never going to look us up again.”
Extortion Attempts: A New Low
The situation escalated when Tewfik received a direct attempt at extortion. One of the review accounts contacted him via WhatsApp, offering to remove the fake reviews… for a price.
He shared evidence with NBC10,detailing the offer and the associated fee. While Tewfik contacted the number, NBC10’s attempt to reach the reviewer was unsuccessful. The number was traced back to Pakistan.
what’s Being Done?
Restaurant owners have reported the fake reviews to google, but the response has been slow. Tewfik emphasized the urgency, stating, ”You submit these claims and are just waiting… and it’s my business. Every day matters.”
Here’s a look at the current landscape:
* FTC Regulations: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) passed a ruling last year banning fake reviews. Violators can face penalties of up to $50,000 per post.
* International Challenges: Enforcing these regulations becomes significantly more tough when the offenders are located overseas.
* Google’s Response: As of this writing,Google has not yet issued a public comment on this specific situation.
* Industry Plea: Restaurant owners are calling on Google to implement stricter verification measures for reviewers. They need faster action to protect their businesses.
Protecting Your Restaurant: What You Can Do
While the onus is on platforms like Google to improve their systems, there are steps you can take to mitigate the damage:
* Monitor Your Reviews: Regularly check your Google business profile for new reviews.
* Report Fake Reviews: Flag suspicious reviews to Google instantly. Provide as much detail as possible.
