Philadelphia Man Surrenders After Fatal Hit-and-Run Following Attempted Arrest
A 35-year-old man is in custody after turning himself in to Philadelphia police following a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of an Uber passenger and injured the driver. Joseph Cini surrendered on December 16th, concluding a more than 24-hour search.
The events unfolded on Monday, December 15th, at approximately 7:14 a.m.on the 900 block of North Watts Street.Members of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office where attempting to serve Cini with a warrant related to an alleged domestic assault.
Cini immediately fled the scene in a Nissan Maxima, heading east on Girard Avenue. Afterward, he collided with a red Jeep Patriot operating as an Uber vehicle. He then abandoned the vehicle and continued to flee on foot, heading north on 8th Street.
the impact proved fatal for Angela Cooper, a 63-year-old woman riding in the Uber. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:24 a.m. The Uber driver,identified as Pastor Stephen Thompson,was transported to Temple University Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Pastor Thompson sustained critically important injuries,including several broken ribs and a collapsed lung,according to his wife,Jenelle thompson.”He’s doing well, he’s resting right now, he’s still in a lot of pain, but he’s alive,” she shared.
Despite his injuries,pastor Thompson’s community continued his work. Members of the House of Triumph Outreach and Worship Center, where he serves as pastor, continued their weekly Tuesday night food distribution in kensington.
Jenelle Thompson highlighted her husband’s dedication, explaining, “Ultimately this is God’s work. he’s like, ‘You still have able people to help you do the work. Just as I’m down, doesn’t mean God’s work is down.'”
