Eycore and Kongsberg Deepen Partnership to Bolster European Space-Based Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR)
The escalating demand for autonomous, secure Earth observation capabilities is driving a meaningful collaboration between Eycore, a pioneering Polish space defense startup, and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) of Norway. A newly expanded strategic partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to deliver sovereign ISR solutions to defense and governmental entities across Europe.
The partnership builds upon a foundation established in 2022, during Eycore’s In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) mission. this initial phase saw Kongsberg NanoAvionics (KNA), a KDA subsidiary, providing the satellite bus platform for Eycore’s inaugural Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. Scheduled for launch in February 2026, this satellite represents a crucial step towards bolstering Europe’s independent access to critical space-based intelligence.
Addressing the Growing Need for Sovereign ISR
The impetus behind this collaboration lies in the increasing recognition of the strategic importance of self-reliance in space-based intelligence gathering. Customary reliance on external sources for Earth observation data presents inherent vulnerabilities.Geopolitical instability and evolving security threats underscore the necessity for European nations to possess independent capabilities for monitoring their territories, protecting critical infrastructure, and responding effectively to emerging challenges.
SAR technology is notably vital in this context. Unlike optical satellites which are hampered by cloud cover and darkness, SAR utilizes microwave radiation to create detailed images of the Earth’s surface, regardless of weather conditions or time of day. This all-weather, day-night capability is essential for comprehensive and reliable ISR.
A synergistic Approach: Eycore’s Radar Expertise & KDA’s System Integration Prowess
The expanded MoU outlines a clear division of responsibilities, leveraging the unique strengths of each partner.Eycore will concentrate on the progress and delivery of advanced SAR satellite payloads, operating across multiple radar bands to provide a diverse range of data collection capabilities. This includes optimizing radar performance for specific applications, such as maritime surveillance, border security, and environmental monitoring.
KDA, with its extensive experience in integrated defense and space systems, will assume the role of system design authority. This encompasses full-spectrum capabilities, including satellite integration, the development of robust ground control infrastructure, comprehensive mission operations, and long-term lifecycle support. This holistic approach ensures a seamless and reliable end-to-end solution for end-users.
“This partnership reinforces KDA’s commitment to advancing sovereign Earth Observation capabilities across Europe,” stated Jarle Naess,Vice President of Business Development Missiles & Space at KDA.”By combining our experience in delivering integrated defense and space systems with Eycore’s radar innovation, we are creating scalable, mission-ready solutions tailored to the evolving needs of defense users.”
Dr. Maciej Klemm, co-founder and CEO of Eycore, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical importance of data security and control. “our mission is to ensure trusted, sovereign access to Earth observation data for defence users, underpinned by our decades of radar expertise and focus on operational resilience,” he explained.
Building on a Legacy of Radar Innovation
Eycore’s commitment to radar technology is deeply rooted in the experience of its founders, Dr.Klemm and Dr. Radosław Piesiewicz. They previously co-founded Advanced Protection Systems (APS), a leading Polish firm specializing in anti-drone and ground-based radar systems. This established expertise in radar development and signal processing is now being directly applied to Eycore’s satellite program, enabling the creation of flexible and adaptable architectures capable of meeting diverse national ISR requirements.
The launch of Eycore’s first SAR satellite in 2026 is not viewed as a singular event, but rather as the initial step in a long-term, collaborative effort. Both companies are committed to a sustained partnership aimed at providing European and allied governments with consistent, trusted access to high-performance, space-based radar systems. This commitment is crucial for maintaining a strategic advantage in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Evergreen Section: The Future of Space-Based ISR
The partnership between Eycore and KDA exemplifies a broader trend towards greater European autonomy in space. Several factors are driving this shift, including increased geopolitical tensions, the growing commercialization of space, and advancements in satellite technology.
Looking ahead, we can anticipate several key developments in the field of space-based ISR:
Proliferation of Small Satellites: The trend towards smaller, more affordable satellites will continue, enabling the deployment of larger constellations for increased coverage and responsiveness.
on-Orbit Processing: The ability to process data directly on the satellite will reduce latency and
