A wave of grief has washed over Lisbon following a devastating streetcar accident that claimed 16 lives. Around 100 people gathered at Lisbon’s Church of Saint Roch on Friday to mourn the victims and offer support to one another. Jose Freire, a co-worker of one of the victims for over three decades, described the mood as “very difficult, very sad.” He recalled that many colleagues routinely used the Elevador da Gloria streetcar, a beloved and iconic part of Lisbon’s transportation system.

Freire voiced a common desire among residents: a swift and extensive investigation. He wants Portuguese officials to determine what went wrong and implement solutions to prevent a recurrence. “I wanted Portuguese officials to figure out what happened quickly and fix it so that it never happens again,” he stated.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has already characterized the accident as ”one of the biggest tragedies of our recent past,” signaling the gravity with which the government is approaching the situation. Multiple agencies are currently involved in the investigation, meticulously examining every detail.
