Mobilizing 1.7 million euros, the AMEAL project, deployed since February 2024, concerns the rehabilitation of 10 douars and villages in the province of Al Haouz. This program aims for economic and educational recovery in disaster-stricken regions through three sectors, education, training and employment.

Following the earthquake that occurred last September in the High Atlas, and which struck five provinces and a prefecture of Morocco, causing significant human and material losses, survivors were also faced with the loss of their means of subsistence.

This situation did not fail to exacerbate the socio-economic inequalities already present in four vulnerable regions due to their predominantly mountainous topography, namely Marrakech-Safi, Drâa-Tafilalet, Souss-Massa and Béni Mellal-Khénifra.

In order to contribute to the support structure in this post-seismic context, the “Better Future for Entrepreneurship and Learning” (AMEAL) project, supported by the European Institute for Cooperation and Development-Morocco ( IECD-Maroc), in partnership with Care Maroc and IECD France, supported this resumption of economic activities in the affected areas by encouraging local entrepreneurship and job creation.

It is in this sense that the launch of this program was given on Thursday in Marrakech, with a view to promoting post-earthquake recovery in 10 douars and villages in the province of Al Haouz, an area particularly impacted by this earthquake.

As a reminder, the results of this natural disaster resulted in more than 2,900 deaths and 5,500 injuries, in addition to material damage estimated at some nine billion euros. Note that beyond the launching ceremony of the said program, its implementation has already been launched on the ground since February 2024 by targeting three sectors: education, training and employment.

600 targeted beneficiaries
This two-year project, which benefited from financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Fondation de France (FDF), is intended to be a response to the effects of the earthquake, by stimulating both economic and educational recovery in the disaster regions.

Targeting 600 beneficiaries, its main objective is to support the relaunch of the economic activities of women and men affected by the earthquake, while reestablishing preschool education to encourage women’s engagement in economic recovery. Support for primary education essentially aims to ensure the promotion of women’s participation in this economic dynamism, through their empowerment.

Women who must “juggle” rebuilding their professional and personal lives while ensuring the education and safety of their children. The project draws on the expertise of IECD Maroc, in collaboration with its strategic partner CARE Morocco, to implement the actions included in the framework of this program.

1.7 million euros mobilized
Mobilizing 1.7 million euros – including 1 million financed by AFD and the rest within the framework of the CSO Initiatives (civil society organizations) system – the project concerns 1,830 direct or indirect beneficiaries. The expected results include the initiation of at least 60% of women in entrepreneurship workshops, the revival of 70% of subsidized entrepreneurs and an increase in profits for 60% of trained beneficiaries.

The project also plans to set up 10 preschool units and develop an educational environment promoting the resumption of learning among children aged 3 to 6, with indicators such as equipping 80% of targeted educators and setting up extracurricular activities adapted in 10 preschool classes.
