ProPublica Pioneers Responsible AI Integration in Investigative Journalism with New Fellowships
ProPublica, the renowned independent nonprofit newsroom, is taking a significant step towards the future of investigative reporting by welcoming its first AI Engineering Fellows, Dana Chiueh and Aaron Brezel. This initiative is part of the Lenfest institute’s AI Collaborative and Fellowship program – a nationwide effort backed by Microsoft and openai to responsibly harness the power of artificial intelligence within mission-driven news organizations. ProPublica was selected from a competitive pool of applicants, joining nine other leading news outlets in this two-year program.

Both Chiueh and Brezel bring impressive backgrounds to ProPublica:
* Dana chiueh: Previously a News Innovation Engineer at the Minnesota star Tribune (also a Lenfest program participant), Chiueh is a proven innovator. She developed “Tipbot,” a tool automating the process of gathering missing details from reader submissions, earning a brown Institute Magic Grant for her work. Her experience also includes reporting for prominent publications like The Dallas Morning News and Los Angeles Times.
* Aaron Brezel: Joining from the Brown Institute for Media Innovation as Lead software Engineer, Brezel has a strong track record of building tools for journalists. He was a founding member of The Washington Post’s reporting tools team, where he developed software used across the newsroom.
