Vladimir Putin officially re-appointed as President Russia in a lavish ceremony held at Kremlin on Tuesday (7/5) local time. This inauguration means Putin will serve the next six years, and a record-breaking fifth term with greater powers than ever.

As reported AFP and , Tuesday (7/5/2024), Putin who is now 71 years old has ruled Russia since the turn of the century. He has been in power either as President or Prime Minister (PM) of Russia since 1999.

Putin received a new mandate to serve as President of Russia for the next six years, after winning a landslide victory in the presidential election (pilpres) which was held last March without any opposition.

Putin’s fifth term begins about two years after he ordered Russia’s military deployment to Ukraine, drawing global condemnation.

Putin is able to dominate the domestic political landscape, but on the international stage, he is embroiled in confrontation with Western countries who he accuses of using Ukraine as a vehicle to try to defeat and divide Russia.

Putin’s oath-taking and inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin on Tuesday (7/5) was boycotted by the United States (US) and a number of Western countries.

“No, we will not send representatives to his inauguration,” said US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller on Monday (6/5).
