Teh Making of a leader: New Insights into Putin’s Rise to Power and Inner Circle
A newly released book, The Tsar In Propria Persona, is offering a deeply researched and unsettling look into the formative years of Vladimir Putin and the network of influence that propelled him to the Russian presidency. Authored by investigative journalists Roman Badanin and catherine Rubin, the book details a complex web of relationships, political maneuvering, and alleged misconduct that shaped the man who now dominates the global stage.
This isn’t simply a biographical account. It’s a meticulously documented exploration of how Putin consolidated power, leveraging loyalty, control, and even scandal to secure his position. The revelations within are especially striking given the current geopolitical landscape.
From FSB Director to Presidential Successor: A Loyalty test
The book sheds light on a lesser-known episode from 1999: Putin’s involvement in a ”honeytrap” operation targeting Yuri Skuratov, then Russia’s chief prosecutor. Skuratov was aggressively investigating corruption allegations implicating members of the Yeltsin family and high-ranking officials.
This operation,as detailed by Badanin and Rubin, involved the dissemination of compromising video footage depicting Skuratov with prostitutes. The footage aired on national television, effectively destroying his career. Just hours after the broadcast, Putin, then head of the FSB security agency, was appointed to lead a commission investigating Skuratov.
This swift action, the authors argue, was a crucial presentation of loyalty to the Yeltsin family. It paved the way for Putin to be positioned as the ailing president’s preferred successor. Notably, Skuratov was also investigating a corruption case known as the ”Putin Case” at the time.
Beyond the Succession: Unveiling the Pillars of Putin’s Power
the Tsar In Propria Persona doesn’t stop at the succession story. it delves into the key elements that have sustained Putin’s rule for over two decades. Here’s what the book reveals:
The Russian Orthodox Church: The book details how the Church was strategically cultivated as a powerful political tool.
Media Control: It exposes the Kremlin’s systematic efforts to gain control over Russian media outlets, stifling dissent and shaping public narrative.
Elite Enrichment: The authors document how Putin’s family and close associates have personally benefited from his ascent to power.
This analysis builds upon existing scholarship. It complements Dawisha’s 2014 work on the subjugation of Russian oligarchs and belton’s 2020 investigation into the influence of former KGB officers and organized crime in post-communist Russia.
Facing Persecution for Pursuing the Truth
Badanin and Rubin’s pursuit of this story came at a important personal cost. Their investigative work drew the ire of powerful figures within Russia. in 2021, their homes where raided by Moscow police as part of a criminal libel investigation stemming from their reporting on Ilya Traber, an alleged organized crime figure with ties to Putin.
“the Russian government persecuted us for digging into putin, his friends and their bad deeds,” Badanin explained to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
Now based in the U.S., Badanin and Rubin continue their investigative journalism through Proekt, an outlet dedicated to scrutinizing the wealth and behavior of Russia’s elite.
