The large-scale and musical open-air production will tell about a seemingly small but historical event – the arrival of tick-borne encephalitis in the territory of Latvia. Drawing parallels between the diversity of the insect world and our society, the show will encourage people to think about issues such as mutual respect and tolerance, as well as introduce viewers of all ages to the habits of Latvian insects and bring up the topic of personal health and safety while staying in nature.

In the center of the opera’s events is a docile insect commune, whose peaceful life is turned upside down when two mysterious foreign wanderers – Suņerce and Taiga mite – enter their home on the back of a raccoon dog. The more warlike insects of Latvia treat the intruders with undisguised distaste and are preparing for a fight. Meanwhile, a romantic but fatal love affair blossoms between one of the foreign ticks and one of Latvia’s insects.

The author of the play’s libretto, Klāvs Mellis, reveals: “This is really a work that is suitable for viewers of any age, besides, it deals with very different topics, starting with ecology and health, up to the issues of social integration. Genre-wise, too, this show is somewhere between a Shakespearean tragedy, a Disney cartoon, a historical epic, a romantic drama, and a Mexican soap opera. Moreover, all this – about insects, mollusks and spiders. I think it’s going to be really cool.”

The opera libretto is set to music by the composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music Olesja Kozlovska, while the staging of the show is created by director Paula Pļavniece and movement director Rūdolfs Gediņš. The visual image of the production is taken care of by artists Kate Krolle and Reinis Bērziņš, as well as lighting artist Nikola Suhareva. With Quadrifron the actors of the team Reini Boteru, Āri Matesoviču, Jānis Kroni, Anci Strazda, Anna Ulberti, Walter Carlson, Klāva Melli and Rudolph Gediņu will also be played by actresses Anna Klišāne and Anta Aizupe, as well as a youth choir Lively, conductor Artūrs Gailis and musicians Elsa Bleikša, Bruno Ančāns, Elfrīda Švalbe, Jana Zariņa and Olesja Kozlovska.

The director of the show, Paula Pļavniece, says: “This year, at the end of the theater season, we want to go on a trip to the natural world. In a musically exciting way, viewers of all ages will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the most difficult to notice everyday inhabitants of nature – ticks and other insects. It will be an unprecedented opportunity to look through a magnifying glass into their dances and daily adventures, as well as hear their voices and songs. Every viewer of the show is invited to come to the show on time, so that before this musical adventure in nature, they can visit the friends of ticks – the residents of the Riga Zoo.”
