The former radio DJ and presenter, Jan van Veen, has died at the age of 79. His family confirmed this to the news agency on Sunday evening ANP. He died after a short illness.

Van Veen was best known as the presenter of the radio program Candlelight. In it he read love poems from listeners in his characteristic deep voice.

The presenter and DJ started his radio career on September 1, 1964 on board the offshore station Radio Veronica, where he later also became program leader. He presented programs such as The Golden Discotheque, Hits from Sea and the Top 40.

A joke that got out of hand in which Van Veen read love poems on the radio led to pockets full of poems from listeners, after which the program Candlelight arose. That would eventually become one of the longest running programs on Dutch radio.

After Radio Veronica was Candlelight can be heard on various stations, such as Radio 3, Sky Radio and 100% NL. In 2019, Van Veen briefly returned with the program on NPO Radio 5. He stopped after a month due to a difference of opinion about the content of the program.
