From Doodling to a Defining Career
Ravikanth’s passion for cartooning wasn’t a sudden spark, but a lifelong pursuit. He recalls always doodling and sketching, with a childhood dream of becoming a professional cartoonist. This ambition found early encouragement when the Council of Science and Industrial Research began regularly publishing his illustrations in their science magazine.
He strategically combined his artistic inclinations with a practical foundation, earning an Engineering degree. Before the digital age, Ravikanth honed his skills by immersing himself in the archives of publications like The Punch and Blitz at the British Library. This research wasn’t just about technique; it was about understanding the power of visual storytelling.
He credits masters like RK laxman, Charles Saxon, Mario Miranda, and Abu Abraham as key influences, shaping his approach to satire and observation.
Riding the Wave of a Changing India

India was undergoing economic reforms, and newspapers, previously reliant on international caricatures, began actively seeking homegrown talent. This shift, coupled with India’s rising status, provided a wealth of subject matter for a budding cartoonist.
“Over the years, subjects such as science and technology which were once niche, became a part of the mainstream,” Ravikanth explains. Today, his cartoons tackling complex topics like Artificial Intelligence are readily understood and widely disseminated.
The internet has fundamentally altered the landscape of both news consumption and content creation. What once took months to gain traction now spreads instantly, giving cartooning a new immediacy and reach.
Adapting to a Digital World
Ravikanth’s artistic process has also evolved alongside technology. While he still cherishes the tactile feel of charcoal pencils – his preferred medium – he’s embraced electronic and digital tools to seamlessly integrate his work into the modern newsroom. this adaptability demonstrates a commitment to staying relevant and reaching a wider audience.
