Capcom Planning Extensive Future for Resident Evil Franchise, Including Recent Remake of Original Game
The future of the Resident Evil franchise appears robust, with Capcom reportedly laying the groundwork for several new projects, including a remake of the original 1996 Resident Evil. Recent commentary from industry insider Dusk Golem has fueled excitement among fans, particularly those with a fondness for the series’ classic titles. While a new installment, Resident Evil 9, recently launched, Capcom is already looking ahead, with multiple remakes reportedly in development. This strategic planning comes as the company prepares for a major assessment of the franchise’s direction in 2027.
According to Dusk Golem, full production on a remake of the original Resident Evil has begun, though its release remains several years away. This wouldn’t be the first time the game has been remade. a version was previously released for the GameCube in 2002. However, this new iteration is expected to be adapted to reflect the modern design sensibilities of the franchise, building on the success of recent remakes like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4. The development timeline suggests a potential launch window of four to seven years from now, following the release of Resident Evil: Code Veronica and a potential remake of Resident Evil Zero.
Strategic Planning Meeting Scheduled for 2027
Capcom is taking a data-driven approach to its future Resident Evil plans. The company has scheduled a significant meeting in 2027 to assess the performance of Resident Evil 9 (known as Resident Evil Requiem) and chart the course for the franchise in the years to arrive. This meeting will occur after the release of the long-awaited Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake, a project highly anticipated by fans. According to Dusk Golem, Capcom will be closely analyzing reviews, general feedback, and survey data from Resident Evil 9 to inform its decisions.
“Capcom is a very data based company,” Dusk Golem explained in a recent post. “They definitely have a bunch of things being measured by RE9, like past RE games. And paying attention to reviews, general feedback, sure they’ll have a survey for RE9 pretty soon to deliver feedback. That will happen in 2027, a bit after Code Veronica Remake has come out, where they’ll have meetings about all the data, feedback collected, etc, & decide how to move forward with Resident Evil based on RE:4, RE9 & Code Veronica Remake, how best to go forward.”
The Spencer Mansion: Avoiding Repetition in Remakes
Interestingly, plans for the iconic Spencer Mansion, a central location in the original Resident Evil, have undergone some adjustments. A section featuring the mansion was initially planned for inclusion in Resident Evil 9, but was ultimately removed from the project. Dusk Golem suggests this decision was made to avoid thematic overlap with the upcoming Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake and the planned remake of the original Resident Evil.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica, slated for release next year, is expected to feature environments that evoke the atmosphere and design philosophy of the original Spencer Mansion. Following that, the remake of the original Resident Evil will, of course, revisit the mansion once again. Capcom apparently determined that including the Spencer Mansion in both Resident Evil 9 and Code Veronica could lead to player fatigue and diminish the impact of the location. The goal is to maintain the Spencer Mansion’s status as a special and memorable setting, rather than overexposing it in a relatively short period.
(2/3) Mansion, everyone knows that. Likewise, I’m aware that more recently full production on a RE:1 Remake has gone underway (though years out time of writing).
So image if you will if RE9 had this Mansion section. Then you do a RE1 Mansion inspired section again in CVR next

Potential Content Cut from Resident Evil 9
Had the Spencer Mansion section remained in Resident Evil 9, players might have explored:
- The area of the mansion within Resident Evil Requiem
- A return to a mansion-like atmosphere in the Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake
- The Spencer Mansion itself again in the new remake of Resident Evil
Dusk Golem’s assessment suggests Capcom is carefully considering the pacing and presentation of these iconic locations to ensure a cohesive and impactful experience for players. The company aims to avoid saturating the series with familiar environments, instead opting for a strategic approach that preserves the unique identity of each game and location.
The Broader Resident Evil Landscape
The Resident Evil franchise has experienced a significant resurgence in recent years, driven by the success of the Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 remakes. These remakes have not only modernized the gameplay and graphics but have also expanded upon the original stories, offering fans a fresh perspective on beloved classics. IGN recently published a list of the top 10 Resident Evil games, highlighting the enduring appeal of the series.
The upcoming release of Resident Evil: Code Veronica is particularly noteworthy, as it represents a long-awaited remake of a fan-favorite title. Originally released in 2000, Code Veronica introduced new characters and a compelling storyline that expanded the Resident Evil universe. The remake is expected to deliver a visually stunning and immersive experience, staying true to the spirit of the original while incorporating modern gameplay mechanics.
The planned remake of the original Resident Evil is also generating considerable excitement. The first game in the series laid the foundation for the survival horror genre and remains a landmark title in gaming history. A modern remake promises to introduce a new generation of players to the terrifying world of Raccoon City and the origins of the T-virus outbreak.
As Capcom prepares for its 2027 strategic meeting, the company is clearly committed to the long-term success of the Resident Evil franchise. By carefully balancing remakes, new installments, and a data-driven approach to development, Capcom aims to continue delivering thrilling and unforgettable experiences to fans around the world. The next major milestone for fans will be the release of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, expected sometime in 2027.
