This new Resident Evil is shaping up to be another terrifying dive into the world of bioweapons and horror, and here’s a closer look at everything we know about it so far.

Resident Evil: Requiem trailer

Resident Evil: Requiem platforms

Resident Evil: Requiem will launch for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. This means that the next mainline entry is making a proper leap over to current-gen systems, leaving last-gen consoles behind.

Resident Evil: Requiem story

Requiem stars a new character in the form of FBI technical analyst Grace Ashcroft–the daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft–who is tasked with exploring a series of recent murders that were committed at the Wrenwood Hotel. Ashcroft has a personal connection to this location as this is the site where her mother was murdered, and Capcom says that players can expect “a new era of survival-horror,” amplified by technological advancements in the RE Engine that powers the game.

The interesting thing about Resident Evil Outbreak was that the playable characters had been infected with one of Umbrella Corporation’s viruses, making the experience that much more challenging in this 2003 multiplayer co-op game. Alyssa appears to have survived the events of the game–some of her journalistic work was referenced in later Resident Evil games–and it’ll be interesting to see if Requiem links back to Outbreak.

For the first time in a long time, Resident Evil is also returning to Raccoon City. The iconic city was leveled by an experimental thermobaric missile strike toward the end of Resident Evil 2, and since then, it has been a desolate crater, unexplored in other Resident Evil sequels. The reveal trailer for the game teased a few familiar locations, like the police department, barely standing amid the charred ruins of the devastated city.

The infected also seem different this time around, as some of their personality traits have been kept intact. This means that you might run into an infected chef who mindlessly chops up meat with a cleaver or you could come across an infected caretaker who is still obsessively cleaning the floor they used to work on.

Resident Evil: Requiem gameplay

Requiem will see players step into the shoes of Grace and Leon Kennedy throughout the campaign. Your average Resident Evil protagonist knows how to handle a firearm, but in comparison, Grace isn’t as skilled. While she’s still capable of defending herself, Capcom’s description for the game suggests that fleeing from danger is the best path forward. The game combines “deeply terrifying aspects of psychological horror with pulse-pounding action that franchise fans know and love,” Capcom says.

Grace can also craft weapons by harvesting blood from the infected, and when she’s in a tight spot, she can use a hand cannon called Requiem to blast through monsters. The catch is that Requiem ammo is extremely limited, making this a last-resort weapon.

In comparison, Leon Kennedy is focused on survival-action. Similar to his last outing in the Resident Evil 4 remake, he’s fast, dangerous, and can quickly take out a horde of infected while dropping a clever one-liner. If you’re worried that the game might be a little challenging, fret not, because you can choose from several difficulty modes to play in. Casual mode will allow you to focus on the story and make use of several gameplay assists, while Standard mode keeps things straightforward with a blend of challenge and fun.

If you feel like sweating, you can even opt to play the game in Standard (Classic) mode, which only allows you to save your game if you have a spare ink ribbon for a typeriter checkpoint.

Another interesting tidbit is that you can play Requiem from multiple angles. The game will feature both first-person and third-person camera angles, allowing you to experience the story from either a traditional Resident Evil perspective or a first-person viewpoint that has defined modern entries in the series.
