RGB Mini LED TV technology is currently positioned as a high-brightness alternative to OLED, though early reviews and manufacturer strategies suggest it has not yet displaced OLED.
For most viewers, the distinction between a high-end RGB Mini LED and an OLED panel is negligible unless the two are viewed side-by-side. The primary advantage of RGB technology lies in ambient light performance, making it a choice for rooms where there’s lots of ambient light.
Manufacturer Divergence: Sony and Samsung vs. TCL and LG
The rollout of RGB Mini LED has been inconsistent across the major players. Sony has leaned into the technology with the Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II, which seem to deliver on the expectations that Sony set for themselves. Samsung’s R95H delivered “unprecedented colour response,” though there have been reports of motion blur and, well, strangely, there haven’t been many reviews for it, and we’re well into July, which is unlike Samsung.


In contrast, TCL gave RGB backlit technology a body swerve, putting the emphasis on its new SQD Mini LED technology. The company argues that SQD uses more advanced Quantum Dots to deliver a broader range of colours and a higher degree of control that it felt it could not get with RGB Mini LED. While TCL has two RGB models in its 2026 line-up, the company has stated that it does not see RGB as technology to pursue in the here and now, suggesting the technology’s future could be two or three years away.
LG hasn’t particularly embraced RGB, sticking with its OLED models as being its TV of choice. Philips has positioned its RGB model within the middle of its range and stated that OLED remains better for picture quality.
The OLED Conflict: Brightness vs. Precision
The central tension in the current TV market is the trade-off between the brightness of RGB Mini LED and OLED. RGB Mini LED is designed to solve issues where lights and daylight would wash out the colour and detail from TV. However, this advantage is often offset by the fact that many cases of artistic intent are less than 300 nits.
There is also the issue of content mastering. While Sony wishes that the launch of RGB TVs could lead to films and TV series being mastered at higher brightness, there is currently a dearth of content that truly takes advantage of the hardware’s performance.
Furthermore, the price premium required to move from a bog standard QLED to a better kind of TV experience is a significant barrier for the mass market. Most consumers prioritize value and general reliability over the marginal gains in color response that only become apparent in controlled, side-by-side comparisons.
Technical Comparison: RGB Mini LED vs. OLED

While the technology shows promise, it has not yet delivered the “compelling evidence” needed to displace OLED. Instead, the arrival of RGB Mini LED may have inadvertently strengthened OLED’s market position.
The next major milestone for this technology will be the 2026 product cycles, where TCL’s planned RGB entries will provide a clearer picture of whether the industry has converged on a single standard or if SQD and OLED will continue to dominate the premium segment.
