Remembering Anthony Darbyshire: A Life in Music
Anthony Darbyshire, a gifted musician and songwriter best known as the frontman of 80s hitmakers Living In A Box, has sadly passed away. His contributions to the music landscape, spanning decades, left a lasting impact on fans and fellow artists alike. Let’s take a look back at his remarkable journey.
Born on March 8, 1960, in Stockport, England, Darbyshire’s early life took an international turn when his family relocated to Japan during his teenage years. He attended an American boarding school there,broadening his horizons and shaping his worldview.
Before achieving chart success, Darbyshire honed his skills and passion for music. He studied English Literature at Oxford university, demonstrating a keen intellect alongside his artistic drive. Furthermore, he was a member of the Manchester band Zu Zu Sharks, sharing the stage with future rock icon Gary Tibbs of Adam and the Ants.
Darbyshire’s breakthrough came in 1985 when he joined living In A Box. The band quickly rose to prominence with their self-titled debut single,”Living In A box,” reaching Number Five in the UK charts. Remarkably, it also cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, a testament to its widespread appeal.Their debut album, also titled ‘Living In A Box’, achieved Number 25 in the UK.
The band continued its success with subsequent releases. “Room In Your Heart,” from their second album ‘Gatecrashing’, also hit Number Five in the UK. Darbyshire particularly cherished this track, as it allowed him a rare possibility to showcase his guitar playing. Notably, another single from ‘gatecrashing’, “Blow The House Down,” featured a guitar solo by the legendary Brian May of queen.
Though, creative differences and changes within their record label led Darbyshire to leave Living In A Box in 1989. The band ultimately disbanded a year later, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the 80s music scene. Thay later reformed in 2016 with a new vocalist, Kenny Thomas, and in 2022 welcomed Bryan Chambers as their frontman.
Following his departure, Darbyshire embarked on a fulfilling solo career. He released his debut solo album, ‘How Many Angels,’ in 1994, exploring his individual artistic vision. Beyond his own recordings, he lent his songwriting talents to a diverse range of artists.
You might recognize his work on tracks for Lisa Stansfield, Jennifer Rush, and Level 42. He continued to nurture emerging talent, leading songwriting workshops in London until his passing.
Darbyshire leaves behind a legacy of musical innovation and collaboration. He is survived by his wife,Sonia Jones,a respected vocal coach. His music continues to resonate with listeners, reminding us of his unique voice and enduring contribution to the world of music.
