Romanian Navy divers conducted a controlled demolition of two Gerbera drones found floating in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep gas project. Ukrainian authorities confirmed the unmanned aerial vehicles did not belong to Ukraine, as regional security concerns persist following ongoing regional conflict.
Naval personnel responded to reports of unmanned marine debris spotted by a civilian vessel’s crew working near offshore energy infrastructure. The objects drifted on the sea surface close to the Neptun Deep natural gas development site, which stands as one of the European Union’s most significant gas reserves.
Black Sea Discovery Near Neptun Deep Infrastructure
The deployment occurred after workers involved in operations around the platform noticed the foreign objects floating nearby. A coast guard vessel carrying military personnel traveled to the coordinates to investigate the hardware.
Officials determined that the items were Gerbera-type drones. While origin details came under review, Ukraine confirmed to authorities that the machinery did not belong to its forces. The Gerbera model is widely recognized as a Russian unmanned aerial system utilized in aerial strikes during the ongoing conflict.
Controlled Explosions Conducted by Navy Divers
To mitigate potential hazards to shipping lanes and ongoing construction, security forces elected to neutralize the floating units directly. Defense officials stated that authorities made the decision to execute a controlled destruction via detonation due to maritime safety requirements.
Military divers carried out the controlled disposal operation in the country’s exclusive economic zone. Video footage released following the operation captured one of the controlled explosions executed by the dive team.
Regional Maritime Security and Border Context
Romania shares a 614-kilometer border with Ukraine and has experienced frequent security incidents since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. Airspace incursions by foreign drones have occurred repeatedly along the border corridor.
Beyond aerial incursions, Black Sea nations including Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey face continuous challenges from drifting naval mines swept along key commercial and energy transport corridors. Joint operations have successfully eliminated more than 150 mines across the region since the conflict began.
