Russia announced on Monday that it is holding a military exercise that includes practicing the use of tactical nuclear weapons, reports the . The exercise was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin after what the Defense Ministry said were provocative threats by Western officials.

During the military exercises, the preparation and deployment of non-strategic nuclear weapons will be practiced, the Ministry of Defense announced. The missile formations of the Southern Military District and the naval forces are taking part in the military exercises.

“During the exercise, a series of measures will be implemented to practice the preparation and deployment of non-strategic nuclear weapons,” the Ministry of Defense said.

Russia has the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world. The purpose of the exercise is to ensure Russia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty “in response to provocative statements and threats by some Western officials against the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
