Russian Air Defense Intercepts Hundreds of Drones in Massive Overnight Assault

Russian air defense systems intercepted more than 600 drones during a massive overnight wave of attacks across multiple regions, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The assault damaged residential and industrial infrastructure, sparking fires and resulting in casualties in the Kursk and Saratov regions.

Overnight Air Defense Operations Across Russian Regions

Russian military officials reported a massive aerial assault involving hundreds of fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ministry of Defense stated that defensive units intercepted and destroyed 635 drones overnight across numerous territories, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Orel, Rostov, Ryazan, Saratov, Tambov, and Tula regions, alongside the Moscow region, Crimea, Krasnodar Krai, and the waters of the Azov and Black seas. An earlier report from the ministry additionally noted that 200 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles of the airplane type had been intercepted the previous day between 08:00 and 20:00 Moscow time over Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Lipetsk, Orel, Ryazan, and Tula regions, the Moscow region, Krasnodar Krai, Crimea, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and the Black Sea.

In the capital, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported in the fourth hour of the night that air defense systems destroyed six drones flying toward Moscow. Emergency services specialists are working at the site of the debris fall, the authorities reported. Separate reporting from Sobyanin indicated that at least 47 drones were shot down over Moscow and the region overnight during a later date.

In the Kaluga region, Governor Vladislav Shapsha reported that over the previous evening and night, air defense forces destroyed 20 drones over the territories of the Babyninsky, Dzerzhinsky, Zhizdrinsky, Zhukovsky, Kirovsky, Maloyaroslavetsky, Meshchovsky, Sukhinichsky, and Ferzikovsky municipal districts, as well as on the outskirts of Kaluga, with no casualties or infrastructure damage reported.

Casualties and Infrastructure Damage in the Kursk Region

The Kursk region bore a heavy toll from the strikes. Alexander Hinstein reported that 157 drones of various types were shot down over the area between 09:00 on August 5 and 09:00 on August 6. Artillery fire struck evacuated territories 20 times, while drones were used for attacks with explosive devices in 15 additional cases.

The attacks resulted in two fatalities in the region. A 72-year-old pensioner died in the village of Troshino in the Rylsky district, and a 57-year-old man was killed in the village of Kozyrevka in the Bolshesoldatsky district. Hinstein expressed condolences to their loved ones. Eleven other residents sustained injuries.

Significant destruction was recorded across multiple districts. In the village of Maloye Soldatskoe in the Belovsky district, a grain dryer canopy, a water tank, a bulldozer, a loader, a seeder, and two cars were damaged on enterprise territory. In the sloboda of Belaya, a cell phone tower, an auto parts store, building facades and glazing, and a fence were damaged. In the village of Ilek, the facade and three windows of a grocery store were damaged. In Peschanoe, an administrative building on the territory of a peasant-farm enterprise was damaged. In Mokrushino, fire destroyed 50 hectares of winter wheat. In Znamenskoe, the roof and windows of a residential building and a car were damaged. Energy infrastructure damage was identified in the Medvensky, Oktyabrsky, Lgovsky, and Konyshevsky districts. In the village of Kozyrevka in the Bolshesoldatsky district, the facade and windows of a house, a fence, and a car were damaged. The Rylsky district was also seriously damaged: in the village of Viktorovka, two residential buildings were destroyed and two outbuildings damaged, while a car was completely destroyed in Troshino, and one house was destroyed in each of the villages of Ryazhevka and Terehovka. In the settlement of Maryino, the roof and facade of a non-working kindergarten were damaged. In the Khomutovsky district, consequences were recorded in two settlements, including damaged facades, glazing, and two cars in Kalinovka.

Impact on Industrial and Regional Logistics Facilities

Industrial sites and logistics hubs outside the immediate border zones also sustained direct hits. In the Samara region, a logistics complex belonging to Wildberries came under drone attack, as confirmed by the press service of RWB (the combined company Wildberries & Russ) and Governor Vyacheslav Fedorischev. A fire broke out on the Wildberries facility territory as a result of the drone strike, with Fedorischev stating that information regarding casualties was being clarified.

In the Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin reported civil infrastructure damage in Saratov and Engels, confirming two deaths resulting from the attacks.

Meanwhile, Rostov regional governor Yuri Slyusar stated that air defense forces repelled a massive attack on the region, destroying nearly a hundred and a half drones in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and seven other districts: Chertkovsky, Tarasovsky, Millerovsky, Morozovsky, Kamensky, Sholokhovsky, and Azovskiy. In the Millerovsky district, falling drone debris caused a cable fire on an elevator roof, which was completely extinguished without any casualties.
