Russian ballistic missiles struck a drone technology exhibition near Kyiv on July 24, 2026, killing at least 10 people and injuring approximately 100 others. The attack targeted a site attended by leading defense sector figures, part of a broader series of strikes that left at least 15 dead across Ukraine.
Three ballistic missiles targeted the venue, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat, who told Ukrainian TV that only one of the missiles was intercepted. Two others struck the Bucha district, where acting regional governor Ruslan Oliinyk reported that the strike hit the grounds of a private training site where an event was taking place. Oliinyk stated that the Bucha district was the most affected and that there were fatalities and injuries as a result of the enemy attack, and later added that 27 private homes and 44 vehicles were damaged in the strike.
Conflicting Reports on the Venue and Security
The exact nature of the site remains a point of contention among officials. Presidential advisor Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov told the Kyiv Independent that the event was taking place at a training ground near Kyiv along the Zhytomyr Highway, adding that there were injured and killed. However, Yuriy Ignat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, later said the strike occurred at a private sports complex.
Public outrage followed the attack, centered on whether the event had been widely advertised. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Council of Defense Industry told the Kyiv Independent that there were no details about the event or its location publicly available before the attack, and that the invitation was shared only through closed industry channels and appeared online only afterward. The spokesperson further stated that neither the invitation nor the registration link disclosed the venue.
One popular Telegram monitoring channel posted that they did not even know how to comment on the situation and questioned what else needs to happen for there to finally be some awareness of the possible consequences of such actions.
Russian Defense Ministry Claims and Targets
Russia acknowledged the strike, with its Defense Ministry stating it had used high-precision long-range weapons
to target a site where drones intended for attacks on civilian targets in Russia were allegedly being demonstrated. The Russian ministry claimed that drone manufacturers, representatives of Ukraine’s drone forces, and security services involved in planning and conducting strikes on Russian territory were present at the event. Ukraine has not publicly responded to those specific claims.
The strike sparked immediate concern for high-profile figures. Defense Ministry adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov, known as Flash, and technology developer Lyuba Shypovych, who has been involved in developing technology for the Ukrainian army, both confirmed via social media that they were unharmed. Beskrestnov noted he had stayed away from the event because of security concerns.
Criminal Investigations and Legal Stakes
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko has launched two separate criminal investigations into the incident. One probe focuses on a possible violation of the laws and customs of war, while the second examines possible negligence in organizing and holding the event, which Kravchenko described as the improper performance of official duties during the organization and conduct of the event. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the incident is under investigation.

Sloviansk and the Broader Missile Campaign
The Kyiv strike was part of a wider day of violence. In the eastern city of Sloviansk, Russian glide bombs killed five people and injured 15. The Donetsk governor reported that the attack damaged Latvia’s honorary consulate. Additionally, military officials confirmed the deaths of two men in the northern city of Sumy early on Saturday.
Further Russian activity included a hit on an energy facility near Chernihiv, which left about 150,000 residents without power. This follows a trend of escalating mass missile attacks on the capital; on July 19, Russia launched 25 ballistic missiles at Kyiv in a single night.
Ukrainian Retaliation and Strategic Shifts
The strikes coincided with Ukrainian operations deep inside Russian territory. A Ukrainian strike on Friday killed six people and wounded 26 in the Russian city of Kirov, more than 1,000km (600 miles) behind the front line. President Zelensky released video of a factory engulfed in flames, stating that the Ukrainian military struck one of the key munitions corporations in Russia’s Kirov region.
President Zelensky also confirmed that oil facilities in Russia were hit and that an operation targeting the logistics network supplying munitions and other materiel to the Russian military was underway. This included attacks on warehouses of Wildberries, Russia’s biggest online retailer, known as Russia's Amazon.
Local media reported that Wildberries warehouses in St. Petersburg were attacked that day.
The current volatility suggests a continuing cycle of long-range escalation. President Zelensky warned on Friday evening that he had received intelligence that Russia was preparing another massive missile strike, which could happen within the next 48 hours.
