Elite Runner Accepts Sanction for Prohibited Substance, Investigation Continues
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has concluded a case involving Kenyan distance runner Beatrice Chepngetich, stemming from a positive test for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). This resolution underscores the commitment to maintaining integrity within the sport of road running.
On August 22, 2025, the AIU formally charged Chepngetich with an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV), proposing a four-year ban from competition. She promptly admitted to the ADRV.
Because Chepngetich accepted the proposed sanction within the stipulated 20-day timeframe – specifically, on September 10, 2025 – she qualified for a reduction in her penalty. Consequently,her sanction was reduced by one year,thanks to the Early Admission and Acceptance of Sanction provision outlined in ADR 10.8.1.
Ongoing Investigation & Record Preservation
While the HCTZ case is resolved,the AIU’s work isn’t finished. Investigators are currently examining suspicious material recovered from Chepngetich’s phone.This aims to determine if any further violations occurred.
Importantly,all of Chepngetich’s results and achievements prior to the sample taken on march 14,2025,will stand. This ensures a fair assessment of her past accomplishments.
A Message of Accountability & Collaboration
David Howman, Chair of the AIU, emphasized the significance of this case. He stated that it clearly demonstrates “nobody is above the rules,” reinforcing the principle of global accountability within the sport.
Brett Clothier, Head of the AIU, highlighted the collaborative effort driving these results. He noted the disappointment for those who trusted the athlete, but affirmed that this outcome reflects how the anti-doping system is designed to function.
Funding Anti-Doping Efforts: A Collective Responsibility
The thorough testing and investigative work in this case were made possible through substantial financial contributions. The World Athletics Label Road Race program received funding from a diverse range of sources, including:
* Major road races like the Chicago Marathon.
* Athlete representatives.
* Individual athletes.
* Leading shoe brands: adidas, ASICS, on, and Nike.
This collective funding demonstrates a shared commitment to safeguarding the integrity of road running. You can be confident that the industry is actively investing in robust anti-doping measures.
This case serves as a powerful reminder that vigilance and collaboration are essential to protecting the fairness and credibility of athletic competition. Its a testament to the dedication of organizations and individuals working to ensure a level playing field for all athletes.
