The Looming Danger of appeasement: Why a Firm Stance Against Putin is Crucial for Ukraine, America, and Global security
the war in Ukraine is entering a critical phase, and the stakes extend far beyond the borders of Eastern Europe. While the initial Russian offensive faltered, Vladimir Putin has demonstrably not abandoned his maximalist goals. He continues to pursue a strategy of attrition, aiming to incrementally seize Ukrainian territory, bolster Russia’s struggling defense industry – now the sole engine of its economy – and sow discord amongst Ukraine’s allies. A risky illusion persists that a negotiated settlement is readily achievable, but the reality is far more complex and fraught with risk.
My observations, gleaned from direct engagement with Ukrainian leadership and analysis of the Kremlin’s behavior, paint a sobering picture. Putin isn’t seeking peace; he’s exploiting the opportunity to weaken Ukraine and reassert Russian influence. The recent, and ultimately misleading, signals of openness to negotiation were not a genuine shift in strategy, but a calculated disinformation campaign designed to fracture the transatlantic alliance and undermine support for Kyiv.
Indeed, there were encouraging signs in late 2024. President Trump’s cancellation of a planned meeting with Putin, coupled with new sanctions on Russia’s energy sector, demonstrated a recognition of this dynamic. Tho, this momentum was quickly lost as the U.S. team was seemingly manipulated into believing Putin was genuinely seeking a resolution. This highlights a critical vulnerability: Putin excels at exploiting perceived weaknesses and divisions within the West.
The Internal Threat to Ukrainian Resilience
Beyond the external pressure, Ukraine faces a growing internal challenge. During a September 2024 discussion with a Ukrainian general, a stark truth was revealed: Ukraine has historically been undone not by Russia on the battlefield, but by internal strife. The General’s assessment resonated deeply – the kremlin actively seeks to exploit political ambitions within Ukraine, exacerbating existing tensions and undermining national unity.
as Ukraine prepares for elections in 2026, this vulnerability will be acutely felt. Protecting the integrity of these elections from russian interference must be a top priority for the U.S. and its allies. We must provide robust support to Kyiv in safeguarding its democratic processes, recognizing that a destabilized Ukraine serves Putin’s interests perfectly. It’s also crucial to acknowledge the stark contrast: while Ukraine strives for democratic governance, Russia under Putin will not hold free and fair elections – a clear indicator of his authoritarian grip on power.
The Echoes of History: Avoiding the Mistakes of Appeasement
The current situation demands a clear-eyed assessment of Putin’s intentions and a resolute commitment to supporting Ukraine. We cannot afford to repeat the tragic errors of the past. The appeasement of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, driven by a desire to avoid conflict, ultimately emboldened the Nazi regime and led to a far more devastating war.Ceding territory to aggressors does not guarantee peace; it invites further aggression.
To truly “Make America Great Again,” we must stand firm on principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law. Appeasing Putin is not a path to stability; it is a surrender of American values and a betrayal of our allies. Allowing Russia to retain stolen Ukrainian territory and escape accountability for the deaths of over a million Ukrainians and Russians is not justice – it is indeed a moral failure. This war is not about protecting a distant land; it’s about defending the rules-based international order and preventing the resurgence of an imperialistic power.
A Call for Decisive Action
The path forward requires unwavering support for Ukraine, including continued military and economic assistance, robust sanctions against Russia, and a proactive strategy to counter Russian disinformation. We must also strengthen our own defenses and reinforce the NATO alliance.
This is a defining moment for America and the world. We must learn from the lessons of history, hold Putin accountable for his crimes, and work tirelessly to bring this war to a just and lasting conclusion – one that protects Ukraine’s sovereignty, upholds America’s reputation as a champion of freedom, and safeguards global security.
