Thiruvananthapuram ∙ ‘Sabari K Rice’ prepared by Kerala to compete with Central Government’s ‘Bharat Rice’ will be distributed through Supplyco depots. Supplyco placed a purchase order for this. K rice will be bought at the rate of Rs 40.11 per kg and given at Rs 29 with subsidy.

Sabari K Rice – Price is Jaya (Rs. 29), Kurua (Rs. 30) and Matta (Rs. 30). A ration card is directed to provide 5 kg of any one of these types of rice per month. The 50 kg rice sacks of jai, karava and matta received this month have also been requested to be converted into K rice. The sale will start after the state-level inauguration of K Rice.

Rice procured from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) through open market sales scheme at a reduced price is supplied as “Bharat Ari” per kg by central government agencies and central cooperative societies. It does not require ration card. Until two years ago, the same rice was getting a lower price for SupplyCo. This time, despite the request, it was not received from the center, and in the background of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, ‘K Rice’ is coming up.

Supplyco authorized depot managers to purchase bags for distribution of K rice. If the cloth bag is not available at any depot, it was also suggested to deliver it from another depot. The decision was announced in a video conference of Supplyco regional managers and depot managers. It is estimated that around 50 lakh bags will have to be purchased.

Earlier I bought bags for Onkit for 15 rupees each. At that rate, it will cost 7.5 crores per bag of rice. There are accusations that some people in the ruling party are buying bags to gain advantage. Supplyco employees are yet to be paid their salaries for February. When the rice bought at 40 rupees is sold at 29 rupees, the company will incur a liability of crores. Currently, 10 kg of rice is being given as subsidy. Apart from that, bags are bought and K rice is distributed. The suppliers are not ready to supply the goods despite increasing the price of the goods and calling for tenders. Earlier, the reason was that there was a liability of more than Rs.1000 crore in goods supplied.
