The historic equestrian event of the Sartiglia in Oristano is gearing up for its 2026 edition, with critically important changes implemented to ensure a high standard of competition and safety. Recent decisions by the Cavalieri Association prioritize a meritocratic selection process and a focus on rider skill, perhaps setting a new precedent for customary Italian pageantry. This year’s Sartiglia selections are being conducted with a unique approach, emphasizing closed-door training sessions and revised evaluation criteria.
Navigating the New Selection Process for Sartiglia 2026
A key development involves conducting selections without a public audience, accessible strictly to members of the Cavalieri Association. This allows organizers to temporarily sidestep the requirements of the Abodi Decree, a regulation concerning public events. Because these sessions are considered private training, many of the standard safety protocols are being relaxed. I’ve found that this approach allows riders to focus intently on thier performance without the added pressure of public scrutiny.
However, this year’s competition introduces a new level of challenge: riders must achieve a passing score to participate in the Sartiglia itself. Previously, simply entering the selection process guaranteed a chance to compete. Now, approximately thirty teams face elimination, raising the stakes considerably.The Cavalieri Association solidified these access rules on January 9th, convening at Corte Baccas and scheduling a follow-up meeting for January 18th to finalize evaluation standards.
According to President Ignazio Nonnis, these sessions are viewed as essential training opportunities. For us,it’s a regular training session,there’s no show for the public,with all that entails.
He further explained that the association is implementing decisions made in prior meetings. Riders will have two opportunities to impress the judges, with a second attempt guaranteed for those who don’t initially meet the required standard. This ensures everyone has a fair chance to demonstrate their capabilities.
Furthermore,insurance coverage for the track has been secured through the Oristano Foundation,effective January 17th and lasting for one month. The closed-door nature of the selections also means the Abodi Decree’s requirements for helmets and protective vests are now discretionary, allowing riders to choose based on their comfort and preference. This is a significant shift, reflecting a balance between safety and tradition.
