A Shift in Perspective
It’s truly inspiring to witness the growing number of male dancers embracing this traditionally female-dominated art form. Raju believes the continued evolution of the arts hinges on institutions that nurture emerging talent, notably those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. He fondly acknowledges the profound influence of his own gurus, recognizing their instrumental role in shaping his journey and success.
the ‘Ashtaragamalika Varna’: A Masterpiece unveiled
For this upcoming performance, Raju has chosen the intricate and revered ‘Ashtaragamalika Varna’ as his centerpiece. He first encountered this complex piece through the guidance of Narmada, and it has remained a cornerstone of his repertoire ever since.
This varna holds a special place in Bharatanatyam, showcasing both technical virtuosity and artistic depth. It’s a composition born from the brilliance of the Tanjore Quartet – Ponnayya, Chinnayya, Shivanandam, and Vadivelu.
A Journey of Love and Devotion
The lyrics, “Saami Ninne Kori,” beautifully portray a nayika’s evolving love for Lord Shiva. initially playful, this affection matures into a profound spiritual connection, unfolding across eight distinct ragas. Moreover, the sancharis – descriptive dance passages – are rich in poetic imagery and intricate rhythms, creating a serene experience of Bhakti Bhava (devotional feeling).
Perfecting this piece was a three-year endeavor, undertaken with the meticulous guidance of Narmada. Raju expresses a heartfelt wish that she could witness his execution of the dance,a performance imbued with her signature style. Originally choreographed by Kitappa Pillai, the varna seamlessly integrates aesthetic footwork with eight jathis within the Rupaka tala.
