The suspect was arrested and suffered “life-threatening injuries,” a Düsseldorf police spokesman told AFP.
According to him, several students were seriously injured in the attack, but their lives are not in danger.
A spokesman confirmed local media estimates that up to five schoolchildren were injured.
He said the school sent out notices to parents informing them that the attacker was a 17-year-old student who was suffering from a manic-depressive episode.
Local police said in the morning that they were responding to an unforeseen situation at the school.
“We are on the scene with many officers,” the Wuppertal police announced on social network X (in a former tweet).
