Television host Sheinelle Jones is emphasizing the importance of modeling positive body image for children, noting that parental behaviors and self-talk directly influence how young people perceive themselves. During a recent segment on the third hour of NBC’s TODAY, Jones discussed the necessity of speaking kindly about one’s own body to help the next generation develop healthy self-esteem.
The conversation centered on the subtle ways parents inadvertently pass down body insecurities. “You know how you look in the mirror, and you go, ‘Ugh, I feel so fat today’? Or ‘Oh, my cheeks!’” Jones said during the broadcast. “Our daughters—and guys, boys too—are listening and watching.”
The host highlighted her relationship with her daughter, Clara, as a primary example of how children mirror their parents’ actions. Beyond just verbalizing insecurities, Jones pointed out that children observe daily habits, including personal care and style choices. “I noticed that she takes on a lot of my mannerisms,” Jones explained. “We even dress the same, or we wear headbands. And so it goes to show even when you’re not saying it, they’re watching our behavior.”
For Jones, this realization has prompted a shift in how she approaches her own reflection. She stated, “The way I want her to live is how I’m trying to live, right? So I don’t want to look in the mirror and disparage the body that’s kept me healthy.”
Empowering the Next Generation
During the discussion, both Jones and Hager referenced the influence of actor and producer Tracee Ellis Ross. They highlighted Ross’s public stance on intentionality in personal life, specifically the concept of being a “chooser” rather than waiting to be “saved,” a narrative often found in traditional fairytales.
Hager expanded on this, suggesting that instilling these values early in a child’s development is essential for long-term confidence. “I have told my girls that,” Hager said. “Because what it does is it empowers women to think about what they want, in everything, not just in romantic relationships. ‘This is up to you. You’re the chooser.’”
Honoring Family Milestones
The conversation regarding parenting arrived shortly after Jones marked a significant personal milestone for her family. On social media, Jones celebrated the 14th birthday of her twins, Clara and Uche. In an Instagram post, she shared a carousel of photographs reflecting on their growth over the past decade and a half.
“14 years ago today … our lives were forever changed. A two-for-one special!” Jones wrote in the tribute. The images included memories ranging from the children’s infancy to their preschool graduation.
