A total of two oil tankers reportedly made it through Red Sea in the heat of the region. One of the ships passing by was an Indonesian-flagged ship.

Quoted from , Friday (2/2/2024), it was reported that two ships that initially deviated from the Red Sea had reversed direction and passed through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The ship’s movements were tracked by LSEG and Kpler.

The ships passed when the United States (US) and Britain launched attacks on the Houthis in Yemen for almost a week. A total of two Aframax type tankers that passed Bab al-Mandab on January 17 were the Indonesian-flagged Gamsunoro and the Marshall Islands-flagged Free Spirit.

The two tankers were carrying heavy fuel and last stopped in Fujairah, which is one of the world’s largest fuel oil centers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The owner of the cargo and the destination of the ship have not yet been stated. However, both ships have flagged off Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea ports in the past week.

noted that 22 other oil tankers had been diverted or stopped since last Friday from the US-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in Bahrain to allow the vessels to avoid the Bab al-Mandab Strait for several days.

The 15 oil tankers took the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope in both directions, which can take up to three weeks to sail between Asia and Europe. A total of seven others are still in the Gulf of Aden or in the northern part of the Red Sea.
