The Cosumar Group highlighted sustainable agricultural and industrial practices during the International Agricultural Show in Morocco (SIAM 2024) held in Meknes. The manufacturer is focusing in particular on the reduction of industrial water, the recycling of waste and the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG).

According to the figures revealed on the occasion, Cosumar achieved a 50% reduction in industrial water consumption at the Casablanca refinery in 10 years and a 73% reduction in industrial water consumption in sugar factories. of beets in 10 years. The strategy adopted also made it possible to reduce industrial water consumption in cane sugar factories by 64% in 10 years, specifies the Group. In addition, 100% of ordinary and similar waste is recycled or recovered, with hazardous waste being treated “in accordance with legislation with accredited organizations”.

That’s not all: a drop of 57,000 tonnes of GHG emissions in the pulp drying process was recorded following the migration from fossil energy to solar energy, while 100% of crop areas sugar makers adopt “Smart Blender” technology. Note that 75.6% of Cosumar’s supply comes from local sources, and 83.6% of suppliers are local, including 18% from the regions.

These advances in the field of sustainable industry take place in a context where the sugar sector in Morocco is experiencing a major transformation thanks to the 2021-2030 Program Contract. The latter will make it possible to increase the cultivated area from 64,500 to 73,000 ha and increase the production of white sugar from 560,000 to 620,000 tonnes by 2030. This program contract will be financed with a budget of nearly 5.74 billion DH over the decade, distributed between the Moroccan Interprofessional Sugar Federation (FIMASUCRE) with 2.63 billion DH and the State (3.11 billion DH).
