Simon Verherstraeten 8th in 100m Final After Cramps at European Championships

European 100-meter finalists faced brutal scheduling hurdles as British sprinter Romell Glave claimed the continental gold medal in 10.09 seconds. Among them was Belgian sprinter Simon Verherstraeten, who fought through severe calf cramps to finish eighth in the final with a time of 13.12 seconds.

The path to the medal podium tested the physical limits of every contender in the starting blocks. Glave secured the gold medal two years after capturing bronze at the Euro de Rome, navigating the grueling multi-round format better than much of the field. His compatriot Jeremiah Azu took the silver medal with a run of 10.16 seconds, while German sprinter Owen Ansah rounded out the podium by claiming the bronze in 10.19 seconds.

For Verherstraeten, the evening proved to be an uphill battle against his own physiology. The Antwerp-based athlete had earlier posted the sixth-fastest time in the semi-finals with a crisp 10.27 seconds, booking a well-earned spot in the medal race. However, the tight turnaround of roughly an hour and a half between rounds took a severe physical toll on the sprinter’s legs.

Reflecting on the physical breakdown after the race, Verherstraeten spoke openly about the punishing nature of the schedule. “À l’échauffement, j’ai déjà senti des crampes au mollet. C’était impossible de courir. C’est frustrant. Ce n’est pas idéal de sprinter plusieurs fois dans la même journée. C’est décevant aussi car les chronos réalisés sont à ma portée…mais 3 courses sur un jour, c’est dur. Il faudra travailler là-dessus l’année prochaine,” he explained.

Physical Toll on the Track Affects Contenders

The intense scheduling demands of major sprinting championships frequently place extraordinary stress on athletes’ muscles, and the European showcase was no exception. Beyond Verherstraeten’s struggle with debilitating calf cramps, the final was heavily impacted by another high-profile physical setback. Marcell Jacobs, competing at 31 years of age, cut his effort short midway through the race and ultimately finished seventh with a time of 12.26 seconds after appearing to suffer an injury.

The attrition rate in the final highlighted the razor-thin margins between peak performance and physical breakdown during multi-race days. While another Belgian competitor, Emiel Botterman, had exited earlier after running a 10.45 in the semi-finals, Verherstraeten managed to limp across the finish line to secure eighth place despite his locked muscles.

Looking Ahead to Future Championships

As the athletics community reviews the results from the continental showcase, athletes like Glave, Azu, and Ansah celebrate hard-earned hardware, while competitors dealing with fatigue look toward the upcoming season.
