Stepping into the Desert Landscape of a Cinematic Classic
The stark beauty of Palm Springs provided the backdrop for a truly unique film experience. It’s a location that immediately evokes a sense of isolation and otherworldliness, and that was certainly felt during production.The desert’s arid climate demanded respect - and a lot of sunscreen!
I remember constantly trying to maintain any semblance of a tan, battling the relentless sun. Evenings brought a different kind of wonder, with incredibly bright, full moons illuminating the landscape. Coming from the humid, green spaces of northeast Texas, the desert was a stark contrast. While Texas has its dry areas, I was always prepared with hats and protective clothing.
This environment profoundly impacted the film’s atmosphere. It really amplified the feelings of loneliness and the subtle strangeness woven into the story. It’s captivating, becuase at the time, neither I nor my colleague fully grasped the director’s overarching vision.
We were, in a way, willing participants in his artistic process – pieces on a grand chessboard. He was a true visionary, one of the great film artists of our time.

It’s incredibly rewarding to hear such high praise for someone who touched so many lives through their work.The entire cast and crew shared a deep respect and affection for one another. It was a truly collaborative environment.
discovering an audio commentary years later offered a fresh outlook. It’s fascinating to revisit a project with the benefit of hindsight and new insights. To think, there were layers of meaning I hadn’t fully appreciated at the time!
And yes, it’s now undeniably clear - my character did contribute to a rather significant event. It’s a revelation that certainly opens up a whole new set of questions!
