Archaeologists have found five human skeletons in Poland, next to the former house of Hermann Göring, the second in command of the Nazi Third Reich and a close friend of Adolf Hitler, writes the CNN.

Archaeologists were excavating the area of the Nazi command center once known as Farkasverem in Gierloz, northeastern Poland, when they found a fragment of a human skull. The authorities then ordered new excavations, the Latebra Foundation, which deals with history, published.

During the research, a total of five skeletons were found, all of which are missing hands and feet.

The remains belonged to three adults, a teenager and a newborn baby. The bodies were buried next to a house where Göring used to live. The bodies may have been buried naked, as archaeologists have not found the remains of their clothes.

The police are still investigating, the next important step is to determine the age of the remains using radiocarbon dating. It is not yet clear why the bodies are missing limbs.

“The uniqueness of the discovery lies in the fact that the bodies were found in the area of the best-preserved complex of the Third Reich,” Latebra said in a statement.

Farkasverem, built kilometers away from civilization in the forests of northeastern Poland, was the Nazis’ Eastern Front Command. Hitler spent almost three years there. According to the Latebra Foundation, the base was one of the largest military bases in Europe.
