  • Snooker professional Stephen Maguire surprised with a moment of disgust at the World Cup.

  • So the 43-year-old put a fly in his mouth.

  • The Scot said he spat it out again later.

Snooker is a sport for gentlemen, etiquette is very important. It is frowned upon to curse, cheer too loudly or be too loud in general. This applies to fans as well as players. The professionals also have to be smartly dressed at most tournaments, i.e. with elegant trousers, a shirt, a vest and a bow tie around their neck.

One person is an exception: the Scot Stephen Maguire has a dispensation against the fly – due to a larynx/thyroid disease – and is therefore allowed to compete without it. Is it significant that the 43-year-old is causing a stir at the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield’s Crucible Theater because of another fly?

He spat them out again

Because: In the quarterfinals against the Englishman David Gilbert, whom Maguire lost 8:13 and thus failed, the Scot caused an yuck moment. He appeared to pick up some of the felt on the snooker table and put it in his mouth.

He later admitted that it was a fly. “I spat them out when no one was looking,” he subsequently told journalist Phil Haigh. The BBC apparently didn’t record this moment. However, one X user wrote: “I can confirm that a clear spitting moment was observed from seat C26.”

There is literally a bad aftertaste from this moment of disgust, which makes you wonder what Maguire was thinking at that moment and where he had put his etiquette – certainly not in his mouth.
