Sony renews its BRAVIA brand to enrich the home movie and cinema experience. With the spread of streaming services, watching movies comfortably at home has become more and more popular. Sony’s wide range of products, such as digital cinema cameras, professional monitors and professional headphones, are widely used by film production professionals, giving the company a deep understanding of the cinema industry and the aspirations of filmmakers and content creators. The new BRAVIA further enhances the sense of reality of movie content and provides outstanding picture and sound quality at home so that movies can be enjoyed just like the magic seen on the big screen.

By unifying TV sets, sound projectors and other home audio technologies under one brand name, Sony aims to offer customers a solution that meets the vision of filmmakers so that they can enjoy a movie experience with dazzling picture quality and sound at home. The matching features and designs of BRAVIA TVs and BRAVIA Theater home audio products make it easy for consumers to choose and combine a complete home entertainment package.

BRAVIA Theatre: immersive cinema sound for watching movies at home

Sony has a unique breadth of experience in the film industry, from professional cameras and monitors to film production and film distribution. Building on these strengths, with the launch of the just-announced BRAVIA Theater home audio product line, the company focused on the differences between the theater and home viewing environment and worked on several initiatives to bring the same immersive sound to the home environment. The cinema’s acoustics are precisely designed, so that the sound emanating from the large number of speakers placed on the ceiling and walls creates a localized sound field that gives viewers an overwhelming sense of immersion. With the help of BRAVIA Theater, the same acoustic cinema experience can be enjoyed at home.

“Building on decades at the center of professional film production equipment development and film production and distribution, Sony is uniquely positioned to bring its unparalleled experience in film industry, professional equipment and consumer electronics to the pioneering BRAVIA TVs and BRAVIA Theater you can use it with home audio devices,” said Yoshihiro Ono, head of Sony Corporation’s Home Entertainment business. “We are excited to introduce the new BRAVIA TV and BRAVIA Theater home audio products, which introduce exciting new features that will elevate home movie watching,” added Yoshihiro Ono.

Key technologies and features of 2024 BRAVIA Theater home audio products

360 Spatial Sound Mapping

Using Sony’s own 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology, multiple phantom speakers are generated in places where there are no actual physical speakers, such as on the top or sides. This enables a 360-degree surround sound experience, optimized for the home environment, with a wide sound field that surrounds the viewer with sound from different directions, reflecting the cinema experience, without the need to install physical speakers on the ceiling or walls. Previously, both a sound projector and rear speakers were required to create phantom speakers – the newly released BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 and BRAVIA Theater Bar 8 offer a 360 Spatial Sound Mapping experience with a single sound projector. With the BRAVIA Theater Quad 4 slim speakers, wider surround sound can be realized.

Sound Field Optimization

BRAVIA Theater products are compatible with the Sound Field Optimization function, which automatically adjusts and tunes each speaker based on the layout of the room, helping to find the optimal placement of the system so that the effect of cinema sound can be felt at home.

Acoustic Center Sync

Acoustic Center Sync integrates your sound system, such as a sound projector, with your TV, so the sound matches exactly what’s happening on the screen, and the cinema-like setting becomes home. In cinemas, speakers are placed directly behind a screen with many small holes and the sound emitted from it is forwarded so that the dialogue and sounds overlap the image projected on the screen and can be heard from the correct position. When combining BRAVIA TVs with BRAVIA Theater products, the Acoustic Center Sync function seamlessly merges the sound from the TV’s speakers and sound projector, creating a cinema-like experience where the sound seems to be coming directly from the TV screen.

Voice Zoom 3™

Combining BRAVIA Theater home audio products with compatible BRAVIA TVs, Sony’s new Voice Zoom 3 uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to recognize human dialogue and increase or decrease its volume, so even shorter conversations are heard loud and clear.

Settings for Voice Zoom 3 and the BRAVIA Theater audio range connected to BRAVIA can be managed using the new BRAVIA Connect App (formerly Home Entertainment Connect App) without the menu bar appearing on the TV screen while watching a movie.

Optional speakers

By adding a wireless subwoofer or rear speakers, you can enjoy powerful, deep bass and enhanced surround sound. Equipped with a powerful 180 mm driver and a passive radiator, the SA-SW5 or SA-SW3 subwoofer, which provides 300 W of deep bass, can be placed anywhere with wireless connectivity. SA-RS5 is a pair of rear speakers with a built-in battery and an up-firing speaker and does not need to be connected to a power source, allowing it to be placed in a wide variety of locations. With the rear speakers, 360 Spatial Sound Mapping provides a much clearer and wider sound experience.

BRAVIA Theatre U

Sony’s new neckband speaker delivers immersive sound that envelops the ears for free yet personal listening. Immersive cinema experience at high volume without worrying about the environment and can be enjoyed with Sony compatible BRAVIA TVs with Dolby Atmos® sound with 360 Spatial Sound. Up to two BRAVIA Theater U speakers can be connected to a single TV or other devices using the Speaker Add function. Both viewers can enjoy clear, immersive surround sound while being free to adjust the volume to the desired level.

・IMAX Enhanced and Dolby Atmos® compatibility:

Environmental initiatives

Sony has developed an environmental plan called Road to Zero, which aims to achieve zero environmental impact by 2050 through its business operations and product life cycles. To contribute to this vision, BRAVIA and BRAVIA Theater will employ innovations that provide the best viewing experience with high picture and sound quality and premium design, while contributing to the reduction of environmental impact as follows.

Reducing the use of virgin plastic:

The choice of material especially affects the sound quality. Sony has spent years developing a unique recycled plastic that is both environmentally friendly and helps create high-quality audio products. BRAVIA Theater home audio products use a unique recycled plastic that allows Sony to reproduce superior acoustic performance while reducing the use of virgin plastic. The material used in BRAVIA Theater home audio products is recycled material from PET bottles. The material has been carefully selected for optimal sound quality, design, texture and color.

Commitment to accessibility

Sony’s business aims to contribute to an inclusive society and increase accessibility so that people with different needs can use its products. BRAVIA and BRAVIA Theater develop their products with accessibility in mind so that all customers can enjoy the movie experience, regardless of disability or age.

To help the visually impaired set up BRAVIA Theater home audio products, a prominent square frame on the packaging indicates a QR code for the BRAVIA Connect app, which provides screen reader support. Tactile dots on the back of the BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 and 8 indicate the eARC HDMI connector for connecting to your TV.
