Sony is pressing ahead with its controversial timeline to end physical disc manufacturing for new PlayStation games, despite facing sustained resistance from collectors and preservationists. Speaking through a live interpreter during an investor-focused Q&A following the company’s first-quarter financial results, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed the widespread reaction to the July 1 announcement.

Tao explained that the decision was driven primarily by broader market transformations across the entertainment sector. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalisation is progressing, Tao said, noting that Sony gave the community a one-and-a-half-year notice before the scheduled January 2028 cutoff.

“And so, when we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward.”

The executive added that Sony is not seeing any negative impact on its core operations at this stage. According to the company’s financial figures for the three months ended June 30, 2026, overall sales income reached ¥2.83 trillion ($17.6 billion), an 8% increase year-on-year, while operating income climbed 40% to ¥476.4 billion ($2.9 billion) aided by U.S. tariff refunds.

The Growing Digital Shift in Software Sales

Sony’s structural pivot reflects changing consumer habits across the industry. In the fiscal year ending March 31, digital downloads accounted for 78 percent of the company’s full-game unit purchases.

Market analysts point to stark historical contrasts. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared data indicating that in the first half of 2008, 100 different PlayStation games sold over 100,000 physical units, compared to just seven titles hitting that milestone in the first half of 2026 according to data reported by Arstechnica. Overall U.S. physical game sales dropped from 297 million units between June 2008 and June 2009 down to 37 million units over the past year.

Financial motivations also heavily favor digital channels.

Community Backlash, Petitions, and Planned Boycotts

The announcement has ignited fierce opposition among gamers, collectors, and preservationists concerned about digital ownership rights, server dependency, and the risk of permanent content loss if storefronts close. Major trade bodies have also weighed in; the UK’s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) slammed the move as a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice.

“To this decision we have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forward those views to us. Games are loved by many people, it’s a form of entertainment that’s loved by people, and it’s connected to people’s fond memories in many cases, and so we understand those emotions.”

Despite acknowledging these emotional ties, Tao signaled that Sony intends to explore how to engage gamers within a future digital ecosystem rather than alter its roadmap.
