SPACE on Ryder farm Pivots to Support Displaced Artists, reimagines Future
SPACE on Ryder Farm, a renowned artist residency program, is demonstrating remarkable resilience and compassion. Following the tough decision to pause its Family Residency program at Ryder Farm in 2024,the organization is forging a new path. this includes a timely initiative to support artists impacted by the devastating Eaton-Palisades fires in California.
A New Residency Born From Crisis
Initially, SPACE was deeply engaged in planning its future beyond the Ryder Farm location. Simultaneously, the organization witnessed the heartbreaking destruction caused by the fires in Los Angeles. Recognizing a critical need, SPACE swiftly pivoted to offer a unique form of support. They decided to leverage their expertise in fostering creative community to provide respite and resources to affected artists.
This led to the creation of a special residency program, in partnership with Colorado Lodge in Big Bear Lake, California. It offers a haven for artists and their families displaced by the fires.
Supporting Artists and Families
Artists were nominated by members of the SPACE community in June and selected through a lottery in July. The inaugural cohort includes a diverse group of talented individuals:
Dr. Kahlil Almustafa: A poet and arts educator, known for his work on Growing Up Hip-Hop.
julia Ahumada Grob: A screenwriter and performer with credits including iCARLY.
John Lavelle: An actor and writer featured in Iama Theater Company’s The Very best People.
Kristin Slaysman: An actor, writer, and filmmaker recognized for The Threesome.
Stephanie Ward: A director whose work includes Women* by Chiara Atik. You’ll find these artists and their families receiving a fully subsidized residency experience. This includes dedicated time and space for creative work. Importantly, their children will participate in nature-focused arts programming led by professional educators.
A Holistic Approach to Residency
SPACE understands the needs of artist-parents. Residents enjoy three fresh, communal meals daily. A dedicated community care facilitator is also on-site to provide support. the residency culminates in informal sharing sessions, showcasing the work created by both parents and children.
Looking Ahead: Reimagining SPACE
SPACE’s board, comprised of Therese Barbato, Monet Hurst-Mendoza, Blair Russell, and Tamara White, is actively reimagining the organization’s future. They are exploring new opportunities to serve artists without the physical location at Ryder Farm.Originally, SPACE’s Family Residencies were closely associated with the Lilly Awards Foundation (founded by Julia Jordan, marsha Norman, and Pia Scala-Zankel). This partnership played a vital role in the program’s early success.
