One person died and three others sustained injuries following a multi-vehicle collision in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood, according to local law enforcement officials. The crash, which involved a total of nine vehicles, occurred when a high-speed vehicle struck a stopped car at a busy intersection.
The incident unfolded at 7:59 p.m. local time near the 2800 block of Garnet Avenue at the intersection of Mission Bay Drive, as reported by the San Diego Police Department (San Diego Police Department). Investigators stated that a 59-year-old man driving a westbound Porsche Cayman at a high rate of speed slammed into the rear of a Kia sedan that was stopped at a red light.
The initial impact created a chain-reaction collision involving nine vehicles in total along the roadway. Paramedics responded to the scene and rushed the driver of the Kia, identified as a 32-year-old man, to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigation and Arrest Following Pacific Beach Pileup
Following the crash, traffic officers arrested the 59-year-old Porsche driver at the scene on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Investigators from the San Diego Police Department determined that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
Three other occupants from various vehicles caught in the multi-car pileup suffered minor injuries. Emergency medical personnel treated them at the hospital before they were released.
