Sperm Whale Language: New Study Reveals Surprising Parallels to Human Speech

Scientists are gaining new insight into how sperm whales communicate, revealing striking similarities to human language patterns. Research published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B shows that sperm whale vocalizations, known as codas, exhibit structural complexity comparable to phonetic systems found in human languages.

The study, conducted by researchers from Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), analyzed sequences of clicks produced by sperm whales off the coast of Dominica. These vocalizations include patterns that function like vowels in human speech, with variations in duration, pitch and rhythm allowing distinctions similar to those in languages such as Mandarin, Latin, and Slovenian.

According to Gašper Beguš, a linguistics professor at the University of California, Berkeley and lead author of the study, the findings suggest an independent evolution of complex communication systems. “When you actually look at it closely,” Beguš stated in interviews with Scientific American, “you realize, ‘Oh, we’re way more similar.’” The research indicates that sperm whales can differentiate vocal elements through short or elongated clicks and rising or falling tones, mirroring how humans use vowel distinctions in spoken language.

The analysis reveals that sperm whale coda vocalizations are “highly complex and represent one of the closest parallels to human phonology of any analyzed animal communication system,” as stated in the published paper. This structural sophistication goes beyond simple repetition, involving multiple interacting layers of organization that were not previously appreciated in animal communication studies.

Mauricio Cantor, a behavioral ecologist at the Marine Mammal Institute who was not involved in the research, commented that the study shows these signals are organized in ways scientists are only beginning to understand. “With this study, we’re starting to see that these signals are organized in ways we didn’t fully appreciate before,” Cantor said, as reported in coverage by The Guardian.

Project CETI, founded by David Gruber, a marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer, has been studying sperm whale communication using artificial intelligence to decode patterns in their vocalizations. Gruber expressed optimism about future progress, noting that while current understanding is limited—comparing it to a two-year-old’s vocabulary—advances in AI and linguistic analysis could enable comprehension of up to 20 distinct vocalizations related to behaviors like diving and sleeping within the next five years. “A future where we’re able to fully understand what the whales are saying and be able to have a conversation with them is totally within our grasp,” Gruber said, emphasizing that continued research and funding will be essential.

The study builds on years of acoustic monitoring and machine learning analysis of sperm whale clicks, which occur primarily during brief surface intervals between deep dives for squid. These surface interactions function as communication hubs where whales exchange information, much like individuals meeting at a watercooler.

As research continues, scientists aim to determine whether these vocal patterns convey specific information about identity, behavior, or environmental conditions. The interdisciplinary nature of Project CETI—combining marine biology, linguistics, and artificial intelligence—reflects the complexity of decoding a communication system that evolved independently in a completely different ecological context.

While the prospect of two-way communication with sperm whales remains distant, the findings underscore the depth of complexity in non-human vocal systems and challenge assumptions about the uniqueness of human language. Further peer-reviewed studies are expected as the research team refines its analytical models and expands its dataset from ongoing fieldwork in the Caribbean.
