Springs, Eternal: A haunting Narrative Adventure from the Creators of Gone Home
Fullbright, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Gone Home, has announced Springs, Eternal, a new lo-fi narrative adventure coming to PC in 2025.This evocative title promises a deeply personal story set within a mysterious and melancholic otherworld. But the journey to this announcement is as compelling as the game itself, reflecting a notable shift for the studio.
A Studio Transformed
The Fullbright of today differs considerably from the one that launched Gone Home in 2013. In 2023, co-founder Steve Gaynor departed following concerns regarding workplace behavior. He acknowledged his actions were “hurtful,” leading to the studio effectively becoming a solo operation.
Since then,Gaynor has been exploring smaller, experimental projects.Toilet Spiders, released in early access, exemplified this new direction – a series of “small, strange, lo-fi games.” Springs, Eternal continues this trend, embracing a distinctly retro aesthetic.
A Nostalgic Visual style
Visually, Springs, Eternal draws inspiration from the late 90s PC gaming era. Expect dithered graphics and a pixelated style reminiscent of classic titles. This isn’t merely a stylistic choice; it contributes to the game’s overall mood and atmosphere. The dominant purple color palette further enhances this sense of wistful melancholy.
However, the game isn’t just about aesthetics. Like Gone Home, Springs, Eternal centers on narrative exploration in the first-person perspective. You’ll uncover a story through environmental details and interactions, rather than traditional gameplay mechanics.
What to Expect in Springs, Eternal
The game unfolds in Stillwater, an isolated mountain retreat. This location is more than just a setting; it’s a “half-remembered otherworld” where lost souls gather. You arrive at Stillwater drawn by the memory of a past relationship.
Over a two-to-three hour experiance, you’ll piece together fragments of this relationship through flashbacks. The world is described as “open-structure,” encouraging exploration of its diverse locations:
* Pools and saunas offer moments of quiet contemplation.
* Caverns hint at hidden depths and secrets.
* A grand lodge serves as a central hub for interaction.
Encountering Lost Souls
Stillwater is populated by over a dozen unique characters. These aren’t simply NPCs; thay’re individuals grappling with their own stories and regrets. You’ll encounter:
* Philosophers locked in endless debate.
* A tattooist offering glimpses into your future.
* Other lost souls seeking solace in the springs.
Through branching dialogue, you’ll uncover their narratives and perhaps find echoes of your own. The game’s announcement subtly hints at a deeper mystery, asking, “The dark paths you walk are ominous, but you can’t die… can you?”
Availability and Release
Springs, Eternal is slated for release on PC in 2025. You can currently wishlist the game on Steam. Keep an eye out for further updates on release dates and potential platforms.
