Scandinavia Secures Historic St leger Victory for Aidan O’Brien
Aidan O’Brien etched his name further into racing history at Doncaster, becoming the first trainer in the modern era to secure three consecutive wins in the St Leger. Scandinavia, expertly ridden by Tom Marquand, narrowly clinched victory in a thrilling finish.
The 2-1 favorite held off a persistent challenge from Rahiebb, winning by a mere neck in a race that captivated a packed crowd. Stay True finished third, while Derby winner Lambourn faded to fourth in the seven-horse field.
This triumph marks a important moment for both O’Brien and Marquand.For Marquand, it was a notably sweet victory, experiencing a full crowd after his previous st Leger win in 2020 occurred under Covid-19 restrictions.
“It’s nice winning a St Leger with a few people here as well – it was a bit quiet last time,” Marquand shared with ITV sport. This win also represents O’Brien’s ninth overall st Leger victory, solidifying his dominance in the prestigious classic.
A Historic Run of Success
Scandinavia’s win follows Jan Brueghel’s victory last year and Continuous’s in 2023, establishing an unprecedented streak for O’Brien. Onyl four trainers in the 249-year history of the St Leger have achieved three consecutive wins.
notably, John scott remains the most accomplished trainer in the race’s history, having secured four consecutive victories between 1838 and 1841. This recent achievement places O’Brien in exceptionally esteemed company.
Lambourn entered the race as a strong contender, heavily backed after winning both the Derby and the Irish Derby. However, Scandinavia proved to be the stronger stayer, building on impressive back-to-back wins in the Bahrain Trophy and at Goodwood.
Marquand Praises Scandinavia’s Temperament
Marquand was effusive in his praise for Scandinavia, highlighting the horse’s exceptional qualities. “He has got the most lovely temperament,” he explained.
“He is just so straightforward and was so tough there. The ground was hard work but he fended them all off.” Marquand clearly expressed his privilege in riding such a remarkable animal.
“He’s an extra-special horse and one I am privileged to sit on today.”
O’Brien Completes a Stellar Day
O’Brien’s success didn’t stop at Doncaster. Later that day, he secured a record-extending 13th victory in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.
Delacroix, the 2-1 favorite, delivered an emphatic performance, finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Anmaat (4-1).This double victory underscored O’Brien’s continued brilliance and cemented his position as a leading figure in the world of horse racing.
