Dungeons & Dragons Game Canceled as Developer Shifts Focus
Disappointing news for fans eagerly awaiting a new Dungeons & Dragons video game: one project, internally known as “Project Baxter,” has been officially canceled. This decision marks another setback for video game adaptations of the beloved tabletop RPG, though growth continues on other titles.
Starbreeze Studios, the Swedish developer behind the Payday franchise, was leading the charge on “Baxter.” Recently, the company announced a strategic shift, prioritizing a complete overhaul of its popular co-op heist series Payday. Consequently, development on “Baxter” has ceased, impacting the studio’s workforce.
Some developers assigned to “baxter” will be reassigned to other Starbreeze projects. Unfortunately, others will be seeking new opportunities, and Starbreeze is providing support during their job search.
what Was “Project Baxter”?
Frist revealed in 2023, “Baxter” promised to blend familiar elements from Starbreeze’s past successes with the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The game was envisioned as a live-service title with a strong emphasis on cooperative gameplay.
While details remained scarce, the planned release window was sometime in 2026 across all major gaming platforms. Concept art teased in early 2024 hinted at more reveals to come, but those plans have now been abandoned.
A History of Canceled D&D games
This isn’t the first time a Dungeons & Dragons video game has been shelved. Before the critical success of Baldur’s Gate 3, a co-op reboot of Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance launched in 2021, only to have its online servers shut down in February of this year.
Furthermore, Wizards of the Coast, the owner of D&D, previously canceled five unannounced games before Baldur’s Gate 3‘s release. These cancellations suggest a challenging landscape for bringing Dungeons & Dragons to the video game space.
What’s Still in Development?
despite these setbacks, hope remains for D&D fans. A single-player action game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe is still actively in development.
This promising project is being led by Stig Asmussen, the director of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, at Giant Skull Studios. You can look forward to more details as development progresses.
This cancellation underscores the complexities of video game development and the evolving priorities within the industry.while “Project Baxter” won’t see the light of day, the future of Dungeons & Dragons in gaming isn’t entirely bleak. Keep an eye on the ongoing development of the Giant Skull project for your next adventure.
