Nikolay Podguzov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Development Bank, stated that Turkey plays an important role in the Central Asian region and has close economic and cultural ties with the bank’s member countries, and said that he thinks Turkey can also become a member of the bank in the future.

Podguzov, who was in Washington to attend the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank Spring Meetings, made a statement to the AA correspondent.

Stating that the Spring Meetings are a very important platform to meet with representatives of other multilateral development banks and compare their approaches to global challenges, Podguzov stated that the world is facing challenges such as climate change and financial deficits, considering global uncertainties.

Podguzov stated that at the meetings, they evaluated how to address and finance global challenges.

THE BANK’S CUMULATIVE INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO IS 15 BILLION DOLLARS

Explaining that the Eurasian Development Bank mainly focuses on 3 main issues that are important for the Eurasian region, Podguzov noted that the development of connection infrastructure, transportation and logistics, increasing energy and water resources and ensuring food security in Central Asia are its main priorities.

Podguzov stated that the Eurasian Development Bank, established in 2006, has invested approximately 15 billion dollars in the economies of its member countries since then.

Reminding that the new 5-year strategy of the Bank, of which Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia are members, was adopted at the end of 2021, Podguzov said, “According to the strategy, we will invest another 11 billion dollars in the economies of our member countries in the next 5 years.” said.

Podguzov noted that they focused on Central Asia in their investments and that Kazakhstan was the key point of their activities and that they had invested more than 2 billion dollars in the Kazakhstan economy in the last 2 years.

Nikolay Podguzov said, “It is very important for us to provide as much support as possible to achieve sustainable development goals in the region, to assist the work of global banks and regional banks and to overcome global challenges. We will do everything to fulfill our mission, realize our goals.” he said.

Referring to the Eurasian Development Bank’s relations with Turkey, although it is not a member country, Podguzov said, “I think Turkey may also become a member of the bank in the future. Turkey plays a very important role in the region and has very close economic and cultural ties with the bank’s member countries.” said.

Describing the projects of Turkish investors in the region, Podguzov reminded the support given by the Eurasian Development Bank to Turkey during the earthquakes that occurred last year.

“We already have ties with Türkiye and we hope that this will eventually lead to membership,” Podguzov said. he said.
